• CANbus interface for signal transmission
The BMW Research and Engineering Center in Munich, Germany, requires multipurpose-designed test stands for testing specific functions, or for long duration tests needed in environmental testing. When upgrading their test stands, they chose to power their test bench with PME process measurement electronics with CANbus interface and the MGCplus measuring system for recording all their standard measurement parameters.
The original T10F torque transducer was replaced by the smaller T10FS torque flange that produces an equivalent torque output, but allows the torque flange to fit around the original exhaust gas equipment on the test bench. Additionally, BMW wanted to place the data acquisition system close to the engine being tested, and the digital signals gathered to be transmitted to a computer in the control room, nearly 65 ft away, leading to the choice of a CANbus interface.
The test stand needed to have a 19-in. rack that could be rotated, along with the sensors which had to be front-pluggable. The stand also required 8-channel connection plates with Lemosa connectors, a connection plate with 4-pin Lemosa connectors and sensor excitation, and the CANbus input for pressure sensors. CANbus was also needed to allow the test stand’s outputs to interface with high-speed DAQ and motor control systems, as well as the MGCplus Assistant software.
The new measurement system provides a variety of signal conditioning modules, external display and control panels. As a compact unit, the MGCplus offers high channel component density. All hardware and software come from one supplier, HBM, thereby maintaining a tight match between specifications and capabilities.
Temperature signals are captured and processed using thermocouples and Pt100 sensors; and pressure signals, from 32 sensors, are gathered via the CANbus system. A variety of ±10V analog signals, SG full bridges and frequency measurements are acquired and analyzed. Data from the digital motor electronics are collected via CANbus as well.
