APPLICATION XTRA

Anti-reflective material in auto display

          • enhances contrast
          • minimizes glare

Last year Delphi Automotive Systems, Troy, MI, introduced the Communiport Integrated Navigation Radio (INR), a radio system with a full map turn-by-turn navigation system and voice prompts. It integrates full-map navigation capabilities with a DVD-ROM player and AM/FM radio, all designed to fit into a standard instrument panel. Full features of Delphi’s INR include a GPS receiver; full-map navigation with 5.8-in. diagonal full-color display, 2D map views, intersection view for detailed maneuver guidance, destination selection and voice prompts.

Developing an automotive on-board display system presents a significant challenge. It requires that miniature displays have superior contrast, brightness, accurate color transmission, and good day and night time visibility. Using optical-quality acrylic with anti-reflective and scratch resistant coatings helps to protect the display while nearly eliminating glare and reflection, resulting in a strikingly clear and legible display.

The Delphi application uses Clarex AR (anti-reflective) coat filter material by Elliott Group International on the small system display to make the image crisp. Clarex is an optical-quality acrylic filter material formulated to optimize brightness and uniformity of LCD displays. Cast in lightweight acrylic, and available in light transmissions from 45 to 98%, these materials offer increased reflection prevention, under 0.5 percent at 550 nm. The filters protect the display while enhancing contrast and minimizing glare. The colorless material specified by Delphi is a 2 mm thick polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), with scratch resistant, anti-reflective and anti-smudge coatings.

Standard AR coat filter material is available in clear, neutral density gray, green and red with respect to light transmission and thickness to compliment every light source. Five non-glare matte surfaces are available. These materials are available in a wide variety of thicknesses from 0.008- to 0.197-in. in clear as well as various specially formulated colors.

Special coatings and filter types are available for special applications, i.e. EMI shielding, conductive, scratch resistant, anti-bacterial and others. The acrylic material also is offered in a comprehensive range of reflectors, transflectors, diffusors and edge light guides.
