Version 6.4 of this company’s finite element analysis software handles more than double the throughput of previous versions, providing performance to handle large simulations. Coupled with improved graphics speed plus new elements, materials, and solution procedures, the package can address tasks like brake squeal analysis, which requires the modeling of contact and other nonlinear effects. “Brake squeal has been a high warranty problem in the automotive industry for decades,” states S-W Kung, senior analytical engineer at Delphi Corporation, in a recent SAE paper. “The complex eigensolver in ABAQUS version 6.4 has provided the automotive brake industry a seamless way of performing noise analysis. The effect of friction coupling no longer needs to be manually imposed to the system matrix using user-defined subroutines or the direct matrix input. Contact conditions and other nonlinear effects from the pre-loading are also taken into account to formulate the base state for the complex
eigensolution.” Another advance is a “continuum-shell” element, possessing the topology of a solid element to provide accurate solutions for applications having the simultaneous interactions of both contact and bending. Version 6.4 also offers a “Mullins Effect” material model, for improved hyperelastic analysis, as well as a new procedure for high temperature fatigue applications, which shortens the time to arrive at the steady-state response to cyclic loading.

Simulation for rubber molded parts The SIGMAlink interface for SIGMASOFT allows the transfer of simulation results, such as local cure rate or fiber orientation, to finite element programs. This helps the optimization of components based on the actual non-uniform material properties. SIGMASOFT can simulate the filling and curing of rubber, predicting Scorch-Index as well as the cycle time of new products.
Visual Basic CAM Version 9.1 of Mastercam features the ability to run programs written in Visual Basic. VBScript allows users to create customized functions to generate part geometry based on spreadsheet data, and to recreate similar geometry using parametric values. Another achievable function is to automatically import, analyze and create toolpaths for parts from certain CAD packages.
Data exchange and product development Collaboration Gateway 3.0 features the ability to maintain associative references between models when exchanging an assembly between one CAD system and another. The software also supports incremental data exchange, a technique whereby only changed parts are re-processed and incorporated during an assembly exchange.
Rapid prototyping The high-precision, high-definition SCS-1000HDUS is the entry-level model in a series of four rapid prototyping machines from this company. Targeted for small medical devices and miniature critical parts, the unit uses an Hd-Cd laser with a tight beam focus to generate components within a UV-curable resin in a build envelope measuring 11.8- x 11.8- x 10.6-in.
Magnetostatic solver AMPERES 6.1 incorporates linear, non-linear and permanent magnet materials for 3D design and analysis of magnetic equipment and components. Speed and accuracy enhancements include automatic breaking of intersecting surfaces, automatic healing of overlapping surfaces, and a new check elements command. An improved parametric GUI and new material editor are also featured.
ECR management A Request Management module in this company’s PLM software enables OEMs to capture suggestions, then identify and address product issues by managing engineering change requests and other feedback in the same environment as ECOs and other product data. The enhancement speeds product improvement while improving communication between engineering, manufacturing, sales and customers.
Image processing A hardware-independent package incorporates sophisticated blob analysis routines and a powerful optical character recognition reader. The blob analysis software can measure 60 different spatial and grayscale characteristics, and a multi-level threshold feature transcends “foreground” and “background.” The OCR reader supports solid, dot-matrix and user-trainable font sets.
