The Magnasphere switch is an advancement over reed switch technology for security and industrial applications. Inside the sealed case is a 0.068 in. dia spherical rare earth magnet that has been plated with gold. Its normal, at rest position is against the ferrous base surrounding the ceramic electrode seal. When either a magnet or ferrous object approaches the device opposite the top of the electrodes, the sphere rolls toward the object, bridging the two electrodes. The switch is not susceptible to EMI, and it can be packaged as a replacement for inductive proximity switches. It can also be modified to serve as a tilt switch. The contacts are resistant to high voltages, and the device’s construction allows for automatic PCB insertion, wave soldering and plastic insert molding processes.
