Copper coating
Designed as an efficient alternative to ultra-thick electroplating of copper, this company’s cold spray system produces no oxides during the process, resulting in higher quality surface coating and better electrical conductivity. In addition, the process reduces costs and shortens production cycle times. In one application, cold spray reduced production time from two weeks to a few hours. The coating has been successfully tested from 1800°F down to the temperature of liquid nitrogen, with no failures to the surface material. The coating system can be used with copper, copper alloys, aluminum or titanium, and it is compatible with most ferrous and non-ferrous alloy substrates.

Encapsulating urethane
Cable Cast FR is a tough, flame-retardant urethane designed for encapsulating, insulating and providing strain relief on electrical cables and connectors. It forms a tough, flexible jacket or casing with high abrasion, tear, puncture and environmental resistance. The black, non-shrinking castable liquid has a cured tensile strength of 2600 psi and maximum elongation of 800%.

Materials selection
Intended to guide the reader through the process of selecting materials on the basis of their design suitability, Materials and Design: The Art and Science of Material Selection in Product Design explores how near-equivalent products win market share through industrial design differences. These considerations include visual and tactile attributes as well as functional and environmental qualities.

Precious metal analysis
X-ray XDAL and XAN fluorescence spectrometers provide a fast, non-destructive and precise determination of the alloy components of gold and other precious metals. In most cases, these spectrometers eliminate the expensive and destructive cupellation method. Offering <200 eV high-energy resolution semiconductor detectors, the scopes can identify elements close on the periodic table within the same sample.

Chip-resistant coating
Grade TP1000 protective coating is composed of a cobalt-enriched substrate offering a hard interior and tough surface. The coating is made with the CVD/MTCVD technique. Ti(C,N) produces good adhesion and edge toughness, Al2O3 provides a thermal barrier while an additional layer of Ti(C,N) resists flank and crater wear. The top TiN layer manifests any wear and provides built-up edge resistance.

Non-destructive testing
The NDT-RAM (non-destructive testing, resonant acoustic method) system uses an instrumented impact hammer and a microphone to test powdered metals and castings. The system is based on the company’s SDC003 LanSharc hardware platform and identifies internal and external flaws due to dimensions, voids, cracks, material density, bonding and manufacturing. Both automated and manual versions are offered.

Investment Casting
This example of the company’s investment casting is an aerospace structural component measuring 36- x 24- x 14-in. and is cast in Aluminum 357. The part has mechanical properties of 41,000T, 31,000Y and 2.5%E. The single-piece casting replaces a more costly 3-piece design and achieves a high degree of dimensional accuracy. Because of the large, open design, the company designed special wax-holding fixtures to keep the part dimensionally stable during risering system installation.

Sheet acrylic
This line of cell-cast Plexiglas G acrylic sheet has been expanded to include thicknesses of 1.5-, 1.75- and 2-in. Previously, the thickest conventional cell cast sheet was 1-in. thick. The thicker gauge sheet is available in 4-, 5- and 6- x 8-ft sizes. The colorless sheet provides high optical clarity and weather resistance. Cell casting enhances chemical-resistance compared with extruded acrylic sheet.
