No more locks and keys and forgetful passwords or key codes. Previously used only in science fiction, biometric technology provides security via fingerprints, retina scans and voice recognition. Security is the tightest available with quick, easy access for the owner. To design the TouchOpen storage case, Personakey Corporation enlisted the aid of Engineering Design Consultants, Ltd.
Personakey needed a solution to their packaging needs for the new storage case — EDC’s response was a sensor bezor which incorporated the activation circuitry, indicator light and fingerprint sensor. EDC’s mission was to make the user’s finger sit on the fingerprint reader properly for an accurate reading, while maintaining comfort for the user. Along the way, manufacturing solutions were developed to create short lead times to project completion. The first product in the line provides a 12- x 7.5- x 2-in. storage cavity with 3 in. removable padding, available in ½ in. solid walnut or 16-gauge metal construction. A single internal button allows users to be added or deleted. The unit requires 8 AA batteries, and retains stored fingerprints even in the event of a complete power failure or battery drain.
Jory Radke, vice president of engineering for Personakey, had worked with EDC in his last position with Intel and recommended them for the design of his invention. “What sets EDC apart from the others is their willingness to do new things,” Radke says. “They were so receptive to the project and were even willing to throw in additional applications for the design.”
This storage case was designed with children in mind, with uses including medicines, toxic chemicals, jewelry, documents, guns, knives, etc. The storage case can store up to 1000 fingerprints to allow versatile access. Additional biometrically operated products are under development, with custom solutions available.
