Stepping motor control

  • high reliability

  • consistent performance

The VXM is a complete controller/indexer/driver/AC power supply with an RS 232 interface. It can be used interactively with a PC or run stand-alone. The microcontroller digitally controls motor phase switching and all other interface functions. Noise sensitive step and direction translation circuitry have been eliminated. The control has software-selectable motor power and motor model function to run NEMA 17, 23 or 34 devices, and there’s a 10 bit analog input for external sensors, speed setting or analog joystick control. Using a FIFO buffer, the VXM can capture motor positions after an external trigger, and nonvolatile and flash memory can be used to store user programs. The front panel has optically-isolated limit switch inputs and Jog, Run and Stop buttons. Velmex Inc, Bloomfield, NY.   www.rsleads.com/302df-161

Slotless motors
These brushless DC motors are built with high-energy rare earth rotors and slotless stators within a toothless stator ring to eliminate preferred rotor position, reduce audible noise, and maximize torque-to-weight ratios. Reduced winding inductance decreases wattage losses in control electronics. Frame sizes range from 1.4- to 5.8-in. dia, with speeds up to 50,000 rpm and torque constants of more than 600 oz-in. per amp. EADmotors, Dover, NH.   www.rsleads.com/302df-162

Driver IC
The IR2136 family of 3-phase inverter-driver ICs integrates six MOSFET or IGBT high voltage gate drivers with a range of protection functions. The chips are designed to decrease the cost and complexity of energy efficient, electronically driven variable speed motors, as are used in laundry washers and air conditioners, as well as light industrial and automotive motor drives International Rectifier, El Segundo, CA.  www.rsleads.com/302df-163

Low inertia servo motors
In company tests, the 22-100 DSD Series of 3-phase, 540V synchronous servo motors produced 30 to 150% more torque than standard and low-inertia servo motors. Offered in sizes from 22 to 100, the line’s torque ratings range from less than 5 to 300 Nm max. They are designed for industrial automation applications with frequent start/stop requirements, and high inertia and torque specifications. Baumuller America Inc, Bloomfield, CT.   www.rsleads.com/302df-164

NEMA 23 servo motor
Featuring a 1000-pulse-per-revolution incremental encoder, the BLM-N23-50-1000 brushless servo motor provides for a high torque-to-inertia ratio. Its smooth, low speed performance and low cogging allows for highly accurate motion profiling at all speeds. A torque constant of 11.4 oz-in./amp produces 46 oz-in. of continuous torque at 4A. Galil Motion Control Inc, Rocklin, CA.   www.rsleads.com/302df-165

Chipset with multiple breakpoints
Part of the company’s Navigator line, the MC2300 series of two-IC chipset motion processors provides 1, 2 and 4 axes of control for brushless motors. Breakpoint programming allows users to create complex profiles through an internal or external signal, for increased performance of motion profiles and faster real-time responses. Other uses are for instantaneous changes due to external conditions, and cut-on-the-fly. Performance Motion Devices Inc, Lincoln, MA.   www.rsleads.com/302df-166

Brushless DC kit motor
The high performance 000-0326 is designed for low voltage applications where an efficient, high torque motor is required. Designed for 12V battery operation, the motor can deliver in excess of 1 hp of continuous power with a typical efficiency of 90%. Options include windings for specific power requirements, drive-specific commutation and custom mounting configurations. Servo Magnetics Inc, Canoga Park, CA.   www.rsleads.com/302df-167

AC gearmotors
Featuring strengthened shafts that mate to a series of long-life GV gearheads, the V Series of gearmotors operates at noise thresholds of just 29 dB. Power output levels, depending on motor frame size, are 6W, 15W, 25W, 40W and 60W. The series includes induction, reversible and electromagnetic brake motors in single-phase 110/115 VAC, single-phase 220/230 VAC or 3-phase 2200/220/230 VAC inputs. Oriental Motor USA Corp, Torrance, CA.   www.rsleads.com/302df-168

Pancake motors
Nine versions of the EC series brushless pancake motor are offered, from 30 mW to 90W. Ball or ruby bearings further add to the longevity of the electronically commutated design. Depending on the version, maximum speed is up to 20,000 rpm, and Hall effect sensors are optional. Applications include robotics, optics and pumps. Maxon Precision Motors Inc, Burlingame, CA.   www.rsleads.com/302df-169

Linear motor
The 4020-2 direct drive brushless DC motor develops 375 lbs-force at a peak current of 30A and peak power of 5.2 kW. The low inductance B winding provides faster current rise time for high performance incremental motion. Motor position and force are fully programmable through third party servo drives, and the motor is offered in standard stroke lengths from 2- to 20-in. in 2-in. increments. CA Linear Devices Inc, Carlsbad, CA.   www.rsleads.com/302df-170

Digital servo drives
UL-approved DigiFlex drives can operate brushed and brushless servomotors, and support encoder or resolver feedback. A ±10V command reference signal can be used to control either torque or velocity, and a CANopen or SynqNet interface is available to apply torque, velocity or position command reference. Models are available with current ratings of 15A to 100A peak, and supply voltages from 24 VDC to 460 VAC. Advanced Motion Controls, Camarillo, CA.   www.rsleads.com/302df-171

42 mm servomotors
Nickel iron laminations produce a 92% efficiency in this servomotor, while slotless, non-skewed windings achieve a total harmonic distortion under 1%. They can be operated as brushless DC motors with block commutation, or as AC servo motors with sine controllers. At 49,000 rpm, continuous power is up to 1,788W, or 413W at 11,700 rpm. Options include a 500 line optical encoder and a choice of gearboxes. MK-Koford, Des Plaines, IL.   www.rsleads.com/302df-172

Servo motor and drive
The Smartstep system is ready to run after plugging in and setting rotary and DIP switches on the front panel. Single-phase power input provides greater flexibility than less available 3-phase power. Smartstep features constant torque through its entire speed range, and its available momentary torque is 3x greater than the continuous torque, preventing slippage from high, instantaneous loading. Omron Electronics LLC, Schaumburg, IL.   www.rsleads.com/302df-173

Drum motor
Specifically designed for driving conveyor belts in medium- and heavy-duty applications, these motors feature rugged construction. Special packaging allows the motors to tolerate corrosive environments, where caustic materials are conveyed.
