Mechanical . . . SLIDES & RAILS
Linear motion system.
Consisting of a single-piece, ground bearing core and two
recirculating ball bearing circuits with 3.5mm dia. steel
balls, the Econo Rail system has two bearing elements mounted
on a specially-machined plate to provide precision alignment.
The preloaded bearing eliminates play and provides smooth
and accurate motion along the track. The double rail guide
consists of two parallel, hardened and ground steel shafts,
secured in extruded aluminum channels. Hardened and ground
spacers inserted into the extrusion at 50mm centers achieve
parallelism and accurate center distances. The system maintains
parallelism at 0.0005 in. per foot, yet is fabricated without
precision machining--reducing the cost. Tusk Direct,

* Grinding operators ordinarily use
manual trial-and-error methods to adjust the position of
the wire relative to the grinding wheels--roughly a 10-minute
process.. Then, as the surface of the grinding wheels is
dressed off, the guide has to be re-adjusted accordingly.
* In their Generation 5 grinding
machine, Royal Master replaced the manually adjusted wire
guide with a Model 101X ball slide positioning stage from
Del-Tron Precision Inc. This device incorporates a spring-loaded
micrometer drive that allows precise repeatable adjustments
with low friction and zero backlash. The positioner provides
accuracy to 0.0005 inch of travel and repeatability of 0.0001
inch. Its positive locking capability, consisting of a steel
shim and extended micrometer bracket secured to the side
of the stage carriage, allows the user to positively lock
the position of the carriage during use.
* Using this single-axis positioner,
the grinding operator uses a computer to enter the appropriate
distance. The positioner automatically moves the guide to
that exact location within 15 seconds. Other 101X positioners
are used in the feeding system to the grinder. Additional
applications include measuring instruments and optical assemblies,
where light and medium loads require gauging or positioning.
(Ironically, Deltron uses Royal Master's grinders to finish
the eight shafts used in Deltron's positioning stage.)
