Overmolding thermoplastic elastomer.
This product is the first of the new J*Bond elastomers that -- according to company
studies -- improves internal bond strength to unfilled Nylon 6 over competitive resins.
The new resin offers designers the ability to bind directly to nylon without exotic
adhesive systems and pre-heating the nylon. The company will soon announce additional
J*Bond resins, including overmolding grades for ABS, polycarbonate and ABS-polycarbonate
blends with hardness ranges from 50A Shore hardness to 75A. The major benefit to OEM
designers is the ability to manufacture a hard plastic product with bonded components that
have a soft touch and feel. The elastomers are highly colorable, have resistance to heat
aging and chemicals, and require no undercuts in tooling or the use of expensive elastomer
systems to produce tough compliant bonds. J*Von, Leominster, MA.

KRATON polymers. UK bicycle manufacturer Orange Mountain Bikes
chose KRATON to improve the grip and shock absorbency of their bike grab-handle grips. The
polymers are easy to process in economical thermoplastic processing methods, have good
electrical properties and are reprocessable. They improve impact toughness of plastics and
shrink characteristics of polyester thermosets. Other applications include modified
asphalts, polymer modification, adhesives and more. Shell Chemicals,

Glow-in-the-dark compounds. These precolored compounds come in
a wide range of pastel colors such as peach, pink, blue, cream, and green, displaying
daylight colors that differ from their color in darkness. The combination of
phosphorescent pigments can be compounded with elastomers, acrylic, polycarbonate, ABS and
polypropylene. Applications include electronic and consumer goods, safety equipment,
signage and more. RTP Company, Winona, MN. http://www.rtpcompany.com

Microcellular foam urethane elastomers. Durethane M is a
flexible urethane foam ideal for use in business machine components like postal meters,
low-volume feed rollers and actuator pads, where parts must endure repeated compression
cycles. The product is mechanically mixed, self-cleaning and non-glazing. Its uniform cell
size provides excellent compression set, which allows components to return to their
original shape after being compressed. Mearthane Products Corp, Cranston,

Polyurethane skins. ULTRA-THANE 5270 is a flexible, aromatic
polyurethane skin for post-finish and in-mold applications over flexible foams. The
2-component, fast cure polyurethane elastomer with 70-75 Shore A hardness produces a soft
vinyl-like feel on automotive and vehicle interior parts. According to the manufacturer,
the liquid-applied product is specifically designed to produce an elastomeric skin for
flexible polyurethane foams like ISOFOAM 1627-028F. Futura Coatings, Inc,

Molding materials. VersaDamp 2000 TPEs are ideal as anti-shock
and anti-vibration mounts for compactly designed devices with limited isolator sway space,
such as pagers, cellular phones, laptops and other miniaturized mechanical/electronic
components. Formulations can be adjusted to optimize damping performance, durometer or
both. Durometers range from 35 Shore A to 75 Shore A and have broad energy-absorption
capabilities. E-A-R Specialty Composites, Indianapolis, IN. http://www.earsc.com

UV-stable thermoplastic elastomers. These grades of Santoprene
8000 thermoplastic elastomer offer excellent ultraviolet stability and processing
advantages. They are colorable and provide long-term performance for applications that are
exposed to prolonged, direct sunlight. The grades are easy to process using injection
molding, extrusion, blow molding or other melt processing techniques. Available in 60 and
70 Shore A durometers, they are non-hygroscopic. Advanced Elastomer Systems, Akron,
