Solenoid Withstands Aggressive Chemicals
A cost-cutting solenoid coil relies on a high-performance
polyamide and thermoplastic encapsulation technology to stand
up to the very demanding environment of an inert isolation
valve used in laboratory, industrial equipment and instrumentation
applications.
Using DuPont
Zytel HTN for coil form (lower right) and encapsulation, Wabash
Magnetics over-molds solenoid assembly (lower left) in an
efficient single-step process.
Engineers at South Bend Controls, South Bend, IN, designed
the valve, specifying into it the encapsulated solenoid from
Wabash Magnetic Control, Wabash, IN. Zytel HTN from DuPont
Engineering Polymers, Wilmington, DE, protects the solenoid
from aggressive fluids, including reagents, alcohol, sodium
hypochlorite, formaldehyde and sodium hydroxide, for which
the valve controls the flow.
Thermoplastic encapsulation technology allows Wabash to produce
these solenoids at substantially lower cost than metal-encased
solenoids previously used by South Bend Controls. Using a
coil form also molded from Zytel HTN, engineers wind and terminate
the solenoid's magnet wire and then place the coil in a metal
frame. The assembly is then over-molded, producing a fully
encapsulated part in a single step with no secondary finishing
required and no VOC emissions.
The resin grade used by Wabash, Zytel HTN61G35HSL, is part
of a complete pretested and preapproved electrical insulation
system (EIS) that's recognized for compliance with UL 1446
Class B (130°C) requirements. The EIS is one of more than
400 such systems available to companies using DuPont engineering
polymers and insulation materials in combination with off-the-shelf
components and materials from other suppliers.
