Fiber Optics Lift Aircraft Video-on-Demand Systems

In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) has reached a new level of sophistication with the introduction of P@ssport, a high bandwidth system by Rockwell Collins, Cedar Rapids, IA, which makes possible a variety of passenger amenities, including Internet access. The system incorporates a fiber-optic backbone, expanded-beam fiber-optic interconnects, an ATM switch and a downstream copper distribution system. The optical digital signals originate at the system's servers, traveling on the fiber backbone. Downstream the path converts to a FireWire distribution network that takes the signals to electronics boxes at individual passenger seats.0601air1

New fiber optic connectors meet avionics standard ARINC 628 for IFE systems

Key to the system is fiber-optic expanded beam interconnection technology from Tyco Electronics, Harrisburg, PA. These connectors offer high reliability in extreme environments, providing thermal, vibrational and mechanical stability for reliable transfer of the light beams from one fiber to another. Other improvements over a copper-based system include freedom from electromagnetic interference and crosstalk. The fiber system also reduces weight and offers non-sparking contacts.

Rather than butt two fiber ends together, expanded beam technology protects and seals each fiber face and ferrule behind a spherical lens. These interconnects provide precision coupling of fiber-optic signals without making physical contact at the fiber-to-fiber interfaces. The connector's modular format simplifies manufacturing, making it economically competitive with conventional interconnect technologies. Precision alignment pins, integral to the connector, facilitate blindmating.0601air

P@ssport has operated trouble-free for a year in commercial aircraft, and the technology has crossed over to military aircraft for in-flight networks under development. Tyco expects its expanded beam fiber-optic connector technology to find use in rugged industrial applications.
