Liquid vinyl PVC.
Plastisol is a specialized liquid vinyl dispersion of PVC, which can be fused to a
fastener by externally applied heat. When applied to the underside of screws, bolt heads
and rivets, it not only seals out solids, liquids and gases, but also insulates against
noise and reduces vibration. It is weather resistant, self-extinguishing, and can be
formulated to resist harsh chemical environments, abrasion, UV radiation and ozone.
Plastisol can be produced in a range of hardnesses (30 to 90 Shore A) from soft foam to a
hard, dense solid, and offers dielectric strength. It also stays flexible even at very low
temperatures, and is available in virtually any color including fluorescent and clear.
Tensile strength is 750 to 3000 psi. Application temperature range is from -40° to
250°F. ND Industries Inc, Romeo, MI. http://www.1rs.com/007df-646

High specific gravity composites. Thermocomp HSG composites
are produced in 14 resins with specific gravities ranging from 1.7 to 10. These
"heavy" composites enable designers to specify weight in addition to mechanical
and thermal property performance in a variety of applications. For automotive
applications, lead-free composites offer a combination of vibration dampening and inertial
properties. LNP Engineering Plastics, Exton, PA. http://www.1rs.com/007df-650

Closed-cell foams. Minicel and Volara foams can hold unusual
shapes, making it possible to turn out prototypes and finished products quickly.
Cross-linking of the foam bonds the molecules of the polyolefin resin into a structure
that gives the polymer increased strength and other superior properties. Water absorption
of these products is low and structural integrity is high. Foams are available in a wide
range of colors and thicknesses. Voltek, Lawrence, MA.

Polyethylene resins. These new grades of high-density resins
are specifically designed for telecommunications conduit. Improvements to Fortiflex
TC46-25 increases extruder throughput of small diameter conduit. TC46-20 is designed for
large diameter conduit where higher melt strength is needed. TC46-20B, a precompounded
black version, is designed to eliminate a step in the extrusion process and improve the
quality of black conduit. Solvay Polymers Inc, Houston, TX. http://www.1rs.com/007df-651

TPE compound. Multi-Flex TPE A 7606 HF and 6221 A are two
high-flow, injection grade compounds designed for ease of processability in interior
automotive applications, such as mats used for auto consoles and dashboards. The products'
high flow characteristics provide excellent Class A surface quality for both large and
thin parts, and help eliminate splits and breaks in molded surfaces. All standard and
custom colors are available. Multibase Inc, Copley, OH. http://www.1rs.com/007df-653

Resin families. This comprehensive, 112-page manual,
"Designing with Celanex, Vandar, Impet and Riteflex Thermoplastic Polyesters,"
provides details on product properties, part design, molding, assembly and finishing. It
gives designers and engineers the information they need to use these four resin families,
which include alloys and elastomers, in application areas such as appliance, automotive,
electrical, electronic, furniture and recreational equipment. Ticona, Summit,
NJ.

Ceramic. Aremcolox 502-1550-MD is an 80% dense machinable
ceramic material based on a barium-zirconium-phosphate composition. A low coefficient of
thermal expansion ensures that as a part experiences thermal shock, the mechanical stress
caused by its expansion and contraction does not cause the part to crack. It can be used
in applications to 2800°F, is completely inert, does not outgas in ultra-high vacuum, and
does not react with most molten metals, salts and acids. Aremco Products Inc, Valley
Cottage, NY. http://www.1rs.com/007df-655

Nylon resin. MINMAX industrial-grade resin compound is
designed for cost-sensitive applications. Nylon 6 and 66 resin are offered in a range of
custom-compounded grades. These include unfilled, glass-filled, mineral-filled, and glass-
and mineral-filled grades, as well as heat-stabilized and medium and high impact-modified
grades. The resin comes in either black or neutral color and is suited for applications
demanding commercial color coding. M. A. Hanna Co, Norcross, GA. http://www.1rs.com/007df-656
