Multi-jet modeling
The InVision si2 3-D printer is a multi-jet modeling system which combines photocurable hot melt material with the ease of ink-jet printing. Intended to enable designers, engineers and other 3-D data users to produce cost-effective, high-quality durable models and prototypes, the build and support materials are applied and flash cured with UV light. Build area is 12.0- x 7.3- x 8.0- in.

Plastics software
Dubbed “Plastic Engineer in a Box,” this software can be opened at will from within leading CAD applications to help in selecting appropriate plastic materials. Given sufficient parameters, the software guides OEMs through material comparisons, global suppliers and pricing, searches for equivalents, and data for export to downstream, FEA applications. A trial version is offered online.

Mesh conversion
Harpoon software turns a CAD file into a finished mesh with three clicks of a mouse. Proprietary algorithms enable the program to process up to two million cells per minute on standard hardware. A HEX-dominant structure within Harpoon ensures good quality cells, even if CAD data is poor. Harpoon tolerates gaps and overlaps of surface data that would otherwise require manual clean-up.

Manipulating software
VirtualHand for V5 allows Catia V5 users to experience realistic force feedback through their entire hand while handling a 3D CAD model. The software suite is compatible with the upcoming V5-Release 11. Two products make up the suite — one works with the company’s CyberGlover hand sensing glove, and the other provides advanced hand and arm force feedback in a digital mockup environment.

3D printer
The Dimension networked, desktop printer produces functional parts using ABS materials. A breakaway support system eliminates messy post-processing, and the unit is controlled by Catalyst software, which is compatible with Windows NT, 2000 or XP. The software imports STL files, automatically slices and orients the parts, and plots a deposition path for material as fine as 0.010-in. thick.

Electric and magnetic field solvers
V6.1 of this company’s 2D software for EM design and simulation now incorporates a hybridized finite element-boundary element method (FEBEM), which permits designers to switch between three solver techniques. The added protocol can significantly reduce the need to build experimental prototypes, improve product performance and reduce engineering time and costs.

PCB prototyping
The Quick Circuit 9000 provides a work area of 19- x 19-in., well suited to the prototyping of large RF antenna circuit board designs. The speed-controlled Z-axis is pneumatically activated, and a Poly Depth Sensor foot has been enhanced for finer milling of a variety of materials such as RT/Duroid, TMM and Ultralam. The chemical-free prototyping system drills and mills circuit boards in a single day.

Composite SL resin
ProtoTool 20L highly filled liquid resin produces parts with high stiffness and temperature resistance. A typical flexural modulus above 1.3 million psi and a heat deflection temperature of 517ºF can be achieved with a simple thermal cure cycle. Despite the high loading of ceramic reinforcing material, the resin has a high photospeed, and can be used in conventional SL machines without modification.

Simulation and optimization
The 3G Suite of tools, which includes 3G.author, 3G.central and 3G.access, has been upgraded with a new dynamic response module for engineers studying vibration effects and cyclic load patterns. Stress conditions created by harmonic loads over time can be examined in detail, with instant results presented in a variety of ways. Several meshing and solver extensions have been added also.
