Antimicrobial elastomers

Addressing cleaning challenges, material reduces downtime, part deterioration

Designed for medical and other applications where microbial growth is a concern, Elastoguard elastomer parts control the growth of bacteria, fungi and yeasts, while avoiding the difficulties posed by organic biocides. Rubber parts are particularly vulnerable to bacteria because their chemical constituents provide nutrients that support microbial growth. Additionally, these parts are often used in warm, moist environments that facilitate the proliferation of these organisms. Traditional solutions have blended antimicrobial additives into the rubber compounds, but leaching and temperature sensitivity are major concerns. Elastoguard uses Alphasan AgNaZr phosphate ion-exchange resin that permeates the entire rubber part. The resulting material is heat stable in excess of 800°C (as compared to only 250°C for conventional products). Silver ions, which are considered safe, non-irritating, non-toxic and require no special handling, provide long-term protection and withstand repeated surface abrasion and washing.
