Antimicrobial finish

Inhibits bacteria and mold growth to protect surface for years

The Agion antimicrobial compound is an inorganic finish that combines silver with naturally occurring inorganic ceramic that allows a continuous controlled release of ionic silver over an extended period of time. The antimicrobial aspects of the compound kick in when ambient moisture in the air causes a low-level release of the silver, which has proven antimicrobial characteristics, according to the manufacturer. Because the silver is released in low dosages over an extended period of time, the finish remains in place over many years. If there is increased humidity or wetness, more silver is released. However, there is a maximum level of release to ensure the long life of the finish. The Agion compound is tolerant of high-temperature manufacturing processes and can be incorporated into molded plastics, plastic films and metal coatings. The company’s Upgrade Division can apply it to existing products as well. The Agion compound can be found in disposable stethoscope diaphragms by Doctor’s Research Group as well as epoxy, polyester, urethane-polyester and epoxy/polyester hybrid powder coatings by DuPont. The illustrated application is for LifeStyle lockers by Lyon Workspace Products, which are finished using one of the Agion-infused powder coatings. It inhibits mold, bacterial and odor build-up on the locker surfaces, and the touch transfer of microbes on locker handles and doors.

Expancel microspheres are small plastic particles consisting of a polymer shell encapsulating a gas. When the gas inside the shell increases its pressure and the thermoplastic shell softens, the volume of the microspheres increases – more than 40 times typical diameter values from 10 to 40 µm – resulting in a true density below 30 kg/m3.
