PLC alternative
The LINCS integrated network control system is based on an infinitely configurable and adaptable arrangement of up to 36 remote control modules reporting to and governed by a single master module. These modules contain 32-bit microprocessors and 24 I/O points, and they withstand wet and dusty environments in temperatures from -40° to 176°F. The master control module is driven by a Pentium processor and can provide up to 864 I/O points and solid-state data storage for up to 36 remotes. An available translator module interfaces with J1939, RS465, IEEE1587 and RS232 protocols, with other interfaces customizable.

Motion controller
This 8-axis controller updates all signals, data points and PID every 122 µs on all 8 axes, providing exceptional servo control and high quality application performance on multi-axis requirements. A 64k shared memory permits near real-time data transfer between the application program and the controller. The processor is a 266 MHz PowerPC chip with a 32-bit RISC core, and the 5.0/3.3V PCI universal bus allows for future upgrades without controller alterations. For higher degrees of flexibility and customization, each axis has independent control for servo or stepper motors.

Comparative motors
Suitable as a teaching tool, a set of four 3-phase motors, all in 80 mm OD x 35 mm stack-length packages, facilitates comparison of performance. These include an AC induction motor, a brushless PM synchronous motor, a switched reluctance (SR) motor and a synchronous reluctance motor. Input voltage has been set to 42 VDC — the new automotive standard. Continuous output power ranges from 100 to 250W while shaft speeds can reach 4000 rpm, all depending upon motor technology. Unit peak power values range from twice to thrice continuous power in some models.

Actuator
Designed to provide compliance with ‘no cut in reverse’ government regulations regarding lawn and garden equipment, the PAC pressurized air control actuator offers an alternative to the rough engagement of existing electric clutches. It also eliminates shock loads common with those devices and is capable of engaging a mower deck at idle speed. Drawing less than ˝ A, the actuator reduces electrical load on the engine. Fail-safe devices default to the ‘Off’ position when the 12V power supply is shut off or depleted. The unit can pull 100 lbs with a 2-in. stroke in 2 sec.

Dry-running bearings
Free of organic, sulfur-containing and soft metal coating lubricants, DryRunner bearings can run dry for more than 100 million overruns (as compared to 10,000 rolling element overruns for standard linear bearings). The running surfaces are coated with a hard, abrasion-resistant thin film of tungsten carbide. This coating adheres well to the steel surface, has a low coefficient of friction against a steel counter body, and resists surface fatigue. Operating temperatures are -40° to 80°C and up to 120°C for short intervals. The cage-centering design eliminates cage creep issues.
