Bottle colorants
• reflect fashion trends
• multidimensional effects
This company has opened a NYC branch of its ColorWorks Design & Technology Centers, where three new color effects for bottles have been introduced, reflecting design trends. The Splash Streak series of tri-layer blow molded bottles create multidimensional effects. Monochrome color schemes are enhanced with tactile feel or “smoked” qualities, and reflectiveness can vary from high gloss black enamel to rustic birch bark. Splash Streak color thermochromatic effects vary the hue of a bottle with exposure to sunlight, a heat source or cold; these effects are suited for personal care packaging, but not food contact applications. Additionally, a new line of 12 bright, translucent colors has been introduced to work in tandem with the inherent clarity of the base PET, with a reduction of the pigment needed to tint the resin. They are also not rated for food contact applications.

Electroformable NiCo alloys
The NiColoy family of electrodeposited nickel-cobalt alloys feature a combination of high strength, elasticity and corrosion resistance with reduced wear and long cycle life. The material is available in two types — high hardness and high strength. With a hardness of up to 50 HRC, ultimate tensile strength of 150 kpsi and elongation of 2-3%, this material outperforms conventional electroformed nickel.

Heat-resistant silicone-PPA bonding
Combining Solvay AMODEL A-1133 HS PPA with Bryant SPAPS (select primerless adhesion polymer system) silicone, these companies have created a rigid, soft silicone-coated kitchen utensil prototype that withstands temperatures to 550°F (as compared to 300°F for conventional materials). The PPA retains shape in cooking conditions while the soft silicone does not mar delicate pan surfaces. SPAPS eliminates the use of toxic and expensive primers, while reducing molding time and labor associated with secondary production operations.
