One-part epoxy changes from red to clear under UV

Master Bond UV15RCL is a low-viscosity, cationic-type UV-curing system with a special color-changing feature. The red material changes to clear once exposed to UV light, indicating that there is UV light access across the adhesive material. Although this change in color from red to clear does not indicate a full cure, it does confirm that the UV light has reached the polymer. This epoxy is an excellent electrical insulator. UV15RCL adheres well to metals, glass, ceramics, and many plastics, including acrylics and polycarbonates.

New USCAR/SAE oil filters specifications could aid consumers and suppliers

New specifications for aftermarket spin-on oil filters intended for use on gasoline engines in cars and trucks of Chrysler Group LLC, Ford Motor Company, and General Motors have recently been approved by SAE International.

The standard, SAE/USCAR-36, developed by a working group of the United States Council for Automotive Research LLC (USCAR), whose members include Chrysler Group, Ford, and GM, consists of four unique filter specifications (SAE/USC-A, B, C or D) and is designed to encourage high-quality aftermarket filters that provide consistent performance.

The new specifications are designed to enable consistently reliable replacement parts and performance that support longer intervals between oil changes. Additionally, manufacturers and suppliers will benefit from a streamlined parts inventory, improved customer satisfaction, and fewer oil-related warranty claims. The new specifications also set the requirements for filter media performance, moisture/corrosion resistance, alternative fuels, and temperature thresholds.

"It is our hope that manufacturers will see the advantages in building filters to meet or exceed this specification," said Tom Spix, GM representative and chair of the working group. "Not only will building filters common to Chrysler, Ford, and GM reduce proliferation and production cost, but potentially enable industry self-regulation."

In the future, many OEM engines will be designed to utilize filters built to the four new SAE/USCAR-36 spin-on filter specs, but there will be exceptions as each manufacturer makes choices based on its particular needs. All three USCAR members currently are producing vehicles that can utilize a SAE/USCAR-36 spin-on oil filter.

How consumers and after-market retailers and suppliers utilize the new specifications has yet to be determined.

"Oil filter manufacturers may already have filters meeting these specifications in their product lines, but it will take some time for them to make the cross-reference," Spix said. "As the service industry and filter manufacturers work together to install and supply good oil filters on vehicles, they can potentially advertise that their filters meet or exceed these specifications."
