Top Tech Tip: Bearing insulation prevents electrical current damage

Smart Sensor checks condition of bearings

ABB has launched the ABB Ability Smart Sensor for Dodge mounted bearings, part of the ABB Ability Digital Powertrain, that enables "health checks" for bearings. The smart sensor technology provides an early indicator of any potential problems by assessing the condition of bearings from vibration and temperature information. Eighty percent of bearing failures are lubrication related, and a bearing "running hot" can indicate that proper lubrication procedures are not in place. Monitoring a bearing's vibration can also indicate potential system problems. Prevent downtime on applications such as bulk material-handling conveyors as well as applications in the food-and-beverage and air-handling sectors.

SPIROL offers pre-stacked disc springs

SPIROL traditionally supplied Disc Springs solely in bulk packaging, and it was the customer's responsibility to stack the Disc Springs into the prescribed configurations. Those days are gone. SPIROL now offers pre-stacked Disc Springs (greased or ungreased) in custom configurations packaged in shrink wrap with a perforated tab for ease of insertion into the application. The pre-stacked Discs are delivered intact to the assembly line, where the operator simply has to place the stack into the assembly and remove the shrink wrap. Applications include braking systems, pipe supports, pick-off spindles in CNC screw machines, and much more.

Cool Tools: World's darkest spray paint

A whole range of products can now take advantage of the world's blackest coating, Vantablack, thanks to the development of a new spray version called Vantablack S-VIS. It is easily applied at large scale to virtually any surface. Vantablack's carbon nanotube matrix structure absorbs virtually all (99.8 percent) incident light, enabling precision optical systems to be optimized. The material's developer, UK-based Surrey NanoSystems, has mimicked the performance of its original Vantablack with this new version that can be sprayed onto objects, rather than deposited using a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process.

New e-chain features injection-molded contact points to reduce energy-line failure due to freezing

In order to prevent freezing of an energy supply, for example on inclined lifts, the motion plastics specialist igus has developed a new e-chain called "ice-chain." With injection-molded raised contact points, the chance of freezing is significantly reduced along with the costs of downtime and maintenance. This solution can be used in applications down to -40 F. The ice-chain is also available as a complete system equipped with pre-harnessed cables that can be quickly installed and connected.

From hydrogen fuel creation to aluminum joining and copper composites, Pacific Northwest National Lab lists 12 clean technologies almost ready for commercial use

PNNL's Solar Thermochemical Advanced Reactor System uses concentrated solar power to convert natural gas into more valuable fuels, including hydrogen for fuel cell cars. The system is among 12 PNNL-developed technologies that are receiving grants from DOE's Technology Commercialization Fund to move them closer to commercial use.

 

 

 

 

One dozen clean energy technologies that enable everything from lightweight, fuel-sipping cars to the expansion of renewable energy and cleaner fossil fuel use are getting a boost at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).

DOE is awarding PNNL about $4.4 million to bring the 12 technologies closer to commercial use, according to an announcement from DOE's Office of Technology Transitions about the first DOE-wide grants from its Technology Commercialization Fund. Companies partnering with PNNL to advance these technologies will also provide matching support, while PNNL will provide funding from its technology licensing income to support projects not involving industrial partners. PNNL is among 12 DOE national labs receiving a total of nearly $16 million to advance 54 different lab-developed technologies through the recent grant announcement.

The funds "will help to accelerate the commercialization of cutting-edge energy technologies developed in our national labs, making them more widely available to American consumers and businesses," said Lynn Orr, DOE's undersecretary for science and energy.

PNNL's 12 winning technologies, how they could be used, the lead PNNL researchers involved, and their partner organizations are as follows:

  1. Solar system that converts natural gas into hydrogen for fuel cell vehicles: Bob Wegeng and Richard Zheng, with STARS LLC, Southern California Gas Company, Infinia Technology Corp., Barr Engineering and Diver Solar LLC.
  2. Making fertilizer from coal fly ash, a byproduct of coal-fired power plants: James Amonette and Josef Matyas.
  3. Self-powered acoustic fish-tracking tag for evaluating fish passage at dams: Daniel Deng, with Advanced Telemetry Systems Inc., Idaho Power Company and Grant County Public Utilities District.
  4. Material manufacturing techniques to make more durable, longer-lasting components for dams: Kenneth Ross.
  5. Method to join aluminum parts made of different thicknesses and alloys for car manufacturing: Piyush Upadhyay, with Honda R&D Americas and Alcoa Inc.
  6. Highly conductive copper composite made with a new manufacturing process for use in high-powered electric motors: Glenn Grant, with General Motors.
  7. Computational prediction tools to improve power grid operations: Yuri Makarov and Pavel Etingov, with California Independent System Operator and AWS Truepower.
  8. Kilowatt-scale vanadium flow battery using an enhanced electrolyte for renewable energy storage: David Reed, with ITN Energy Systems.
  9. Electrolytes for rechargeable lithium batteries: Wu Xu, with Farasis Energy, Inc. and Navitas Systems.
  10. Seals for membranes used to convert natural gas to syngas: David Reed, with Praxair.
  11. Protective coating for solid oxide fuel cells: Jeff Stevenson, with Protonex.
  12. Seals for solid oxide fuel cells: Yeong-Shyung "Matt" Chou, with LG Fuel Cell Systems, Inc.
