NASA software boasts 20 percent lighter structures in 20 percent of the time
Collier Research Corporation is demonstrating HyperSizer, a key software program used to lightweight the heat shield of NASA's Orion Multi-purpose Crew Vehicle, at the 2014 Composites and Advanced Materials Expo this week. NASA's Orion team used information gathered from HyperSizer analyses to get a 23 percent reduction of the final weight of the baseline design, which means hundreds of pounds of unnecessary weight were eliminated.

Volvo unveils triple-boosted 450-hp 4-cylinder engine

They are keeping a lot the details still under wraps, but Volvo unveiled a triple-boost 2-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine with no less than 450 hp on October 9. The new engine is the next-gen version of Volvo's 320-hp Drive-E Powertrain range that debuted in 2013 -- an engine that solidified the carmaker's commitment to developing powerful and fuel-efficient 4-cylinders for its passenger-car and SUV lines.

Engineer's Toolbox:
Protecting motor bearings from electrical damage

Bearing isolators, like contact lip seals, are used to retain lubrication, exclude contamination, and extend the service life of the equipment in which they are installed. Applications Engineer Karyn Caverly at Garlock Sealing Technologies runs through industry standards, special features, and a new type of isolator that can be used in variable frequency drives and other motor applications.

Products: Dual-shielded flat cables for ultimate EMI protection
Cicoil provides multi-layer shielding options that protect cables from unwanted EMI/RFI issues, even in continuous flexing applications. The double-shielded, flat design is comprised of an inner foil shield that provides 100 percent coverage and an overall tinned copper braid with 90 percent coverage. A durable, yet flexible, PFA insulation is layered between each shield, which protects the inner foil shield from making contact with the outer tinned copper braid. In addition, the foil shield is isolated from damage caused by mechanical stress, vibration, and continuous motion.

Products: First instant hybrid cyanoacrylate adhesive
Henkel has introduced Loctite 4090, a versatile, patented hybrid adhesive that combines the bond strength of a structural epoxy with the speed of an instant adhesive. This powerful combo delivers the first structural cyanoacrylate: an adhesive that offers rapid, high-strength bonding to a range of substrates along with impact and moisture resistance, and temperature resistance to 300 F. Versatile enough to solve both indoor and outdoor design and assembly challenges, the new tech greatly expands the capabilities of cyanoacrylates, especially in applications where traditional instant adhesives offer too little strength or are too brittle.

New developments boost LED brightness and efficiency big time
For all of their trumpeted efficiency, did you know that only 2 to 4 percent of the light generated by a standard LED escapes from inside the device? Wow, either did we! With all that trapped light energy, no wonder they get hot. But Princeton University researchers are onto something big to change this, including a 57 percent improvement in brightness and efficiency.

Inside Boeing's astronaut taxi to the Space Station
Boeing is known for making airplanes, but they actually have a long history in space. They've been a contractor for NASA on every manned space mission ever flown. A new shuttle will soon take flight, but NASA won't be making it, private companies will. Boeing hopes that the craft to carry humans back and forth to the International Space Station will be their "CST-100" capsule design. Bloomberg gets a rare look at Boeing's space exploration facilities. (Source: Bloomberg) [Image: Boeing]
