Top Army priorities: Long-range precision fires, hypersonics
The Army's No. 1 modernization priority -- long-range precision fires -- is a collaborative science and technology effort between the Army and the other services, said Dr. Thomas Russell, deputy assistant secretary of the Army for research and technology, at a National Defense Industrial Association-sponsored forum recently. One area of intense focus is hypersonics.

Ultra-realistic prototypes tap into magic of turning design concepts into reality
"Appearance models," the realistic prototypes produced with a combination of 3D printing, traditional manufacturing processes, and expert hand finishing, have a unique ability to dazzle. "Clients are amazed by the quality of the model, because they don't understand how it was made so quickly and realistically," says designer Robert Bronwasser. "It's some kind of magic for them."

Researchers take a stand -- and develop a plan -- in fight against fake graphene
A lack of quality control in the graphene market has led to inferior products being touted as high-grade material, so now a research team from the National University of Singapore is developing a reliable way to test graphene quality.

Fly a business jet like an F-35 fighter: In world first, military active stick tech comes to civilian aircraft
Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. recently announced the certification of its G500 aircraft by the FAA, equipped with BAE Systems' active sticks. The achievement marks a milestone in the history of flight controls as the world's first certified civil active inceptor. BAE Systems has been providing its active stick technology for fixed- and rotary-wing military aircraft for more than two decades.

Image - Top Tech Tip: Nested Wave Springs from Smalley
Top Tech Tip: Nested Wave Springs from Smalley
Nested Wave Springs are pre-stacked in parallel from one continuous filament of flat wire. The need to stack individual springs for higher loads is no longer necessary. Nested springs result in a spring rate that increases proportionately to the number of turns. They can exert tremendous forces, yet maintain the precision of a circular-grain wave spring. In many applications, Nested Wave Springs replace Belleville Springs, particularly in cases where a high but accurate force is needed.

Precision motion for X-ray optics
Despite their potential danger, X-rays are one of the most powerful instruments and resources utilized in medical diagnostics to help medical professionals restore health by identifying the correct prognosis. When it comes to achieving the best imaging with the lowest X-ray exposure, lenses made by Optec are almost inevitably involved. Their aperture, focus, filters, and zoom are precisely moved by FAULHABER DC motors.

Image - Choosing between brush and brushless DC motors: What are the tradeoffs?
Choosing between brush and brushless DC motors: What are the tradeoffs?
Designing a system that involves motion and performs as intended requires choosing the right motor. The most fundamental decision involves commutation type. In some cases, mechanically commutated brush motors provide the best solution for the budget. In other cases, only brushless DC (BLDC) motors will do. Allied Motion provides a comprehensive review of the technology, along with tips and tricks for choosing the right solution for a given application.

Alternative to traditional drive systems
Nexen Group has introduced a stainless steel version of its patented precision roller pinion system (RPS). The Nexen RPS engages two teeth simultaneously to achieve superior accuracy with zero backlash at any length. The system is also extremely quiet and 99 percent efficient. Stainless steel makes the system corrosion resistant, with a long life of up to 36 million meters. Nexen's RPS provides a low-maintenance, durable alternative to rack and pinion, ball screw, and belt drive technology. The RPS is used for a wide range of applications including laser cutting, plasma cutting, and gantry applications.

Image - New bearings for high-speed applications
New bearings for high-speed applications
A clear trend in compressor and pump applications is to raise the power density by increasing the rotational speed. To fulfill this requirement, SKF has developed a new range of single-row angular contact ball bearings. The goals have been threefold: to increase the limiting speed by 40 percent, to reduce the noise levels, and to increase the robustness of the bearing in unfavorable operating conditions (shock loads, shaft misalignment, etc.). Apart from these, SKF is helping manufacturers to meet customer demands for even higher levels of energy efficiency and reliability.

Image - What are the strongest adhesives for bonding titanium?
What are the strongest adhesives for bonding titanium?
Master Bond's labs recently tested the tensile lap shear strength of a variety of adhesives when bonding titanium to titanium. The surfaces were properly roughened and cleaned with acetone in preparation for the tests. Each of the 11 one- and two-part epoxies tested features different thermal, electrical, and chemical resistance properties that can make them more appealing for specific applications. Therefore, it's important to consider the operational conditions before deciding that the system with the highest strength value is the best for the titanium bonding job.

100 years ago: Final Allied offensive of WWI decided fate of Europe
By mid-September 1918, the French and U.S. armies under the command of Gen. John J. Pershing had achieved victory in a critical campaign, driving back the Germans from the Saint-Mihiel salient. With that area secured, about 600,000 Americans, along with some 220,000 French and Italian troops, moved 40 miles to the northwest along the bank of the Meuse River in the Meuse-Argonne region of France.
