| Feature articles | Hybrid tattoo machine makes its design mark When Neuma Tattoo Machines set out to reimagine the tattoo machine, their goal was to design a system that combined the best features of electrical and pneumatic devices. The result is an autoclavable electromechanical tattoo device that weighs about 30% as much as a conventional tattoo gun. Fueled by small, robust DC motors from MICROMO, the low-noise, low-vibration system has blazed the trail in terms of precision, ease of use, and hygiene. Read the full article

| Researchers conduct zero-gravity tests of micro-satellite shield |
 |
Stanford researchers have completed the first successful tests in zero gravity of a protective shield concept for CubeSats – the tiny satellites that hitch rides on rockets sending larger satellites into orbit. The goal is to gather data on what happens when micrometeoroids slam into a satellite. Such impacts often knock out electronic equipment on satellites. The encounters are poorly understood, but the protective canopies could be a first step in eventually building "black boxes" for satellites similar to airplane flight recorders. Look what you can do with plastic sheeting and retractable tape-measure parts! View the video |
