Mechanical X-Fingers replace lost digits, restore function

X-Fingers and X-Thumbs mimic natural body parts without any electronics. The criss-crossing surgical steel levers, which put the “X” in X-Fingers, are actuated by the remaining finger or thumb and covered in thermoplastic for a lifelike look and feel. Dan Didrick, a former medical equipment salesman, is a self-taught SolidWorks designer who has spent eight years creating the world's first active-function artificial finger assemblies specifically for amputees.

Slip clutches can maximize your designs
The way they see it over at Polyclutch, there aren't a whole lot of problems you can't solve with a slip clutch. Way beyond using them for overload protection, there are a surprising number of other applications for these versatile and valuable components. From increasing machine speeds and applying constant tension on wire to indexing a conveyor and automatic screw assembly, slip clutches just may provide the design leverage that you've been seeking.

Wind-turbine placement produces tenfold power increase
The power output of wind farms can be increased by an order of magnitude – at least tenfold – simply by optimizing the placement of turbines on a given plot of land, say researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) who have been conducting a unique field study at an experimental 2-acre wind farm in northern Los Angeles County.

NEW! Portable mass spectrometer detects contaminants on food
A miniature mass spectrometer invented by Purdue scientists can almost immediately detect contaminants in the field including E. coli, pesticides, and other chemicals. Using the mobile device is faster than sending specimens to labs for testing. The researchers envision a day soon when a powerful food-contaminant tester app will be available for smartphones.

Space shuttle cockpit in 360°
If you haven't taken the time to check out the 360° pan-and-zoom tour of the Space Shuttle Discovery to celebrate the end of the shuttle program, there is no time like the present. A reader sent this in and asked if we could spot the creative use of duct tape in the cabin. It takes a good bit of noodling around to find it.
