MIT creates oil-repelling materials

MIT engineers have designed a class of material structures that can repel oils, a novel discovery that could have applications in aviation, space travel, and hazardous waste cleanup. Such materials could be used to help protect parts of airplanes or rockets that are vulnerable to damage from being soaked in fuel, like rubber gaskets and o-rings.

Wheels: Map-controlled thermostat withstands complex stresses
The housing of the map-controlled thermostat by Behr Thermot-tronik, of Kornwestheim, Germany, which is installed in BMW's N43 series four-cylinder gasoline motors, is exposed to a combination of very high mechanical, thermal, and chemical stresses. To enable this complex part to withstand the application's demanding requirements dependably over long periods, Behr decided to make the housing out of DuPont Zytel HTN high-performance polyamide and have the part vibration-welded.
