Noisy Bearings?
Smalley wave springs are ideal for bearing preload. The wave spring preloads the bearing through its outer race, taking up play in the bearing. Preloading will reduce bearing damage, wear, noise and vibration. The wave spring prevents sliding between the rolling elements. Bearing springs come in metric sizes to match popular bearing sizes. Smalley has over 150 standard springs available, from 16 mm to 580 mm. Specials are available for unique bearing sizes with No-Tooling-Charges™. For more info click here.

Flexible displays rolling out for mass market
European researchers have developed a cost-effective method for manufacturing flexible displays in much the same way that newspapers are printed. Their work carries the promise of revolutionizing packaging, advertising, and even clothing — or at least making everyday things a little more enlightening.

How an Irish quarry bears the load
Conveyor uptime has increased dramatically at Corcoran Concrete's quarry in County Mayo, Ireland, following a switch to Dodge-brand gearboxes and bearings from Baldor. The decision was made following trials on conveyors in the sand production area of the quarry. Here, bearings were failing as often as three times a year, and the gearboxes typically lasted only 12 months.

Piezo Motors Electrify the OEM World
A new family of linear and rotary piezo motors was announced by MicroMo Electronics, Inc. Piezo-electric material directly contacting the output drive allows backlash-free positioning to nanometer or microradian resolution and eliminates the need for fragile transmission components. The cost-effective, robust designs meet the needs of applications from consumer electronics to metrology instrumentation. Demo kits ship from stock within 48 hours. Visit MicroMo online.

Pocket-size ultrasound is groundbreaker
A prototype of a therapeutic ultrasound device, developed by a Cornell graduate student, fits in the palm of a hand, is battery-powered, and packs enough punch to stabilize a gunshot wound or deliver drugs to brain cancer patients. Wired to a transducer, it creates sound waves so strong they instantly cause water to bubble, spray, and turn into steam.

Wheels: Auto lighting sockets and connectors get tough
T20 sockets are predominant in European and Japanese vehicles but are gaining broader use in North America. Empire Electronics (Troy, MI) is meeting more stringent demands for high-temperature resistance and durability in automotive lighting parts with its new T20 sockets and 2.8 In-Line connector series made of two different DuPont engineering polymers.
