Integrated CFD modeling process helps Honeywell slash cycle time
Since 1972, more than 11,000 TFE731 engines have been produced, logging 100 million plus hours of service on more than 27 different aircraft applications. For the analysis of the TFE731 combustor, Honeywell currently uses the GAMBIT grid generation package and the CFD solver FLUENT, from Fluent Inc., to generate the parametric geometry and associated mesh, converge the solution, and post-process the results. The implementation of an integrated computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling process is helping Honeywell reduce the cycle time to generate and execute a simulation by a factor of five to 10 relative to a traditional non-parametric approach. Partnering for innovation's maximum effect
While many types of product innovation exist, one category of particular interest to design engineers is the application of new technology, sometimes termed
"radical or disruptive innovation," as popularized in Clayton Christensen's book
"The Innovator's Dilemma." Consider the experience of LORD Corporation, whose success in bringing highly innovative and novel Magneto-Rheological (MR) technology from the lab into commercial acceptance across a number of industries and applications offers some instructive and very valuable lessons in commitment to technology leadership, taking a systems approach, and forming partnerships for maximum effect. Nano world off the radar for most
"In the last 15 years we have continuously been exposed to a variety of emerging technologies — biotechnology, information science and technology, cognitive science, and now nanotechnology," says Akhlesh Lakhtakia, the Charles Godfrey Binder Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics at Penn State. However, when it comes to nanotechnology, Lakhtakia and his colleagues found that people in most segments of the economy are not paying much attention. Or, if they are aware of the field, the reactions and actions are overly enthusiastic, uninformed, or alarmist. Read the full article

Airbus gets a handle on plastic replacements for metal parts
In full compliance with stringent aircraft safety standards, weight reduction was of paramount importance during the development of the Airbus A380, including door handle systems. For Kunststofftechnik Hans Rethwisch GmbH (KTR), it was a great challenge to meet the Airbus engineers' demands to manufacture the lower casings of the two-piece handles (which always had been made from metal die cast) in plastic.
