Electrically conductive adhesives charge forward
The days of “glue” simply bonding electrical components are long gone. Electrically conductive pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) enable smaller electronic designs through thin, effective bonds because they not only bond components together, but also provide the added functionality of supplying pathways for electrical current. Redesigning a high-reliability avionics power supply
Redesign of older lead acid battery systems can result in a 50% or more weight reduction without sacrificing stored energy performance. Couple low-mass lithium batteries with reduced weight electronics design, and a modern battery power supply can vastly improve the available energy-to-weight ratio of the entire power system. New rocket aims for cheaper nudges in space
Satellites orbiting the Earth must occasionally be nudged to stay on the correct path. MIT scientists are developing a new plasma thruster rocket that could make this and other spacecraft maneuvers much less costly, a consideration of growing importance as more private companies start working in space. Wheels: Scrubbing diesel NOx
Urea tanks will be standard equipment for most new diesel trucks, buses, cars, and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) manufactured in the United States after Jan. 1, 2010. An automotive grade of urea, which is derived from the world's most widely used nitrogen fertilizer, will be injected into the vehicles' exhaust stream to "scrub" nitrogen oxide (NOx) from the diesel exhaust. Most popular last week: Wheels: Technology breakthroughs lead to dawn of EFV
If ever there was an idea ahead of its time, the sea-skimming Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV) might fit the description. “Marines recognized the need for this vehicle since World War II, but it’s only in the last two decades that we’ve had the technology to support it,” said Colonel Keith Moore, EFV Program Manager.
