New metal dome stacking procedure
Snaptron,
Inc., manufacturer of metal tactile domes and dome arrays, has
developed a procedure for “stacking” metal domes supplied on
adhesive tape (Peel-N-Place arrays). The stacking domes allow the
ability to double the actuation force of any of Snaptron’s four-leg
domes sizes 7 mm to 20 mm. Actuation forces in excess of 4,000 g can
now be achieved on standard and custom dome arrays with adhesive.
Typically, the life of a dome diminishes as the actuation force
increases in relation to the size of dome. The result is that design
engineers have often had to sacrifice actuation force in order to
achieve their desired life. Stacking domes are designed to allow
higher forces to be achieved with little or no impact on life.

X-TRA
Industrial e-commerce goes to sea
When
you're at sea with your $4.5 billion aircraft carrier and you need a
pressure transducer — quickly — for your list control system,
where do you turn for 24/7 support? The Internet, of course.
Rob Matthes, president of Transducers Direct LLC and a Navy veteran
himself, learned this while handling the 24-hour service calls for
his company. A sailor aboard the Nimitz-class Abraham Lincoln
called from "somewhere at sea" late on a recent Thursday night. The
Navy man had found the pressure transducer he needed for the ship's
list control system on the Transducers Direct website, and he
wanted one, plus a spare, shipped out post haste.
"They needed a non-standard pressure port of 9/16 in., so we could
not ship same day as we normally would, but we built the transducer
on Friday based on their verbal order and waited for their final
instructions while they worked out delivery issues at their end,"
Matthes says. "We got the formal order by email Saturday and later
exchanged several calls and emails with them on their shipping
requirements."
The specific product needed was Transducers Direct's stainless steel
TDG 01 transducer configured for vacuum to 85 psi. It uses CVD
sensing technology to produce measurements with ±0.15% linearity and
provides a 0V to 10V or 4 mA to 20 mA output.
"On Monday we overnighted the products to Pearl Harbor, where they
were put aboard a plane bound for the carrier," says Matthes. "It
was really gratifying to us to provide a small piece of support to
such a great warship in a pinch situation. We've supplied other
ships in port a few times in the past, such the USS Champion and USS
Devastator, where we upgraded them to new linear transducers for
rudder control, but we've never been called by a ship at sea. We
would have loved to learn more about how our transducer fits into
the carrier's list control system, but it was almost as interesting
to see just how powerful the Internet is."

Electrical/Electronic News
Lamina Ceramics introduces new
ultra-bright LED light engines: 16 million colors from a single point of
light
Lamina Ceramics has launched a
new, advanced multi-color line of super bright, high-output light engines
driven by light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Smaller than a U.S. nickel and about
as bright as a 20-watt light bulb, each BL-4000 light engine is a disk-like
array containing four to six individual LEDs, depending upon color.
BL-4000 arrays can be easily wired and mounted individually or in groups to
provide super bright, extremely long-lived lighting for indoor and outdoor
architectural applications, desk and other lamps, higher-output flashlights,
LCD backlighting, signaling, and for use in motor vehicles and airplanes.
Another huge emerging market
is DLP (digital light processing) and LCD televisions and multimedia
projectors, which offer significant advantages over plasma and traditional
CRT (cathode ray tube) counterparts.
"Lamina’s new BL-4000 line of LED light engines provides lighting engineers,
architects, and designers with a tremendous amount of new design
flexibility," says Taylor Adair, Lamina’s president and CEO. "Considering
their very high brightness, the huge palette of colors now available, and
the easy-to-connect capabilities of our light engines, lighting manufacturers
and designers can now create a staggering number of very exciting new
applications that were previously not feasible."
Solid-state lighting is the most significant advancement in illumination
since the invention of the light bulb more than a century ago. Until
recently, LEDs have been used only as simple indicator lights in electronics
and toys — they were meant to be seen, but weren’t bright enough to
illuminate anything.
Although these semiconductors have no filaments to break and emit no heat in
the light they produce, progress toward making LEDs as bright as
incandescent bulbs was hindered because of heat build-up within their
electronic circuits. Heat build-up reduces LED light output, shortens
lifespan, and eventually causes the devices to fail. Lamina Ceramics has
solved this problem with a proprietary packaging technology that allows
multiple LEDs to be densely clustered to achieve exceptionally high levels
of light in very small footprints.
16 million colors from a single point of light
Lamina Ceramic’s BL-4000 light engines shine with models producing pure red,
green, blue, amber, and white light, but the star performer of the line is a
model the same size as the others producing any of 16 million colors through
mixing the output of its six individual red, green, and blue LEDs. This "RGB"
light engine can also produce white light at variable color temperatures,
mimicking the dawn-to-dusk, warm-to-cool qualities of sunlight.
Underscoring its market leading position in the development and manufacture
of super-bright LED arrays, Lamina Ceramics set two successive world records
for brightness over the last six months with its Aterion LED light engines
in RGB and white — the brightest LED arrays ever produced, at 13,300 and
28,000 lumens, respectively. The 28,000 lumens produced are approximately
equal to the brightness of about 28 75-watt tungsten filament light bulbs.
