Motion control Q & A: Flexibility and controllability
Industry discussions at motion control symposia involve such next-generation motion priorities as cost reduction, bandwidth increase, and throughput enhancement, as well as the big-picture need to bring individual production stages under factory-wide control. However, engineers working in the trenches — those who grapple with actual motion system design — are more concerned with nuts-and-bolts issues like flexibility and controllability. New antimicrobial permanently protects plastics
Tradenamed BIOSAFE, a new antimicrobial protects plastics from staining and degradation caused by bacteria, mold, mildew, and fungi and does not compromise end-product safety by migrating out of the plastic or being rubbed off the surface. The basic component in BIOSAFE products has long been used for protecting textiles from microbial growth but until now has been available only in a liquid solution that had no application in polymer processing. New metallic glass composites have 2x strength of titanium
When commercialized metallic glass, known as Liquidmetal and Vitreloy, hit the market several years ago in the forms of golf clubs and baseball bats, it was too brittle to withstand much duress. Now, thanks to scientists at the California Institute of Technology, the new material can be made to flex and at a relatively lower cost. Read the full article

Wheels: Automatic brakes debut on new Volvo XC60
The start of series production of Continental's sensor system for the avoidance of rear-end collisions at city driving speeds represents an important milestone for the international automotive supplier's all-round ContiGuard safety system. The sensor system monitors the road ahead of the vehicle and is networked with the braking system. It automatically applies the brakes if there is a risk of a rear-end collision and the driver either fails to react or his reactions are too slow. Read the full article
5-Star Product: Plug and Sense low-profile digital load/force sensors
The iLoad Pro Series digital load/force sensors are designed for use in heavy-duty or industrial environments and are available in capacities ranging from 10 lb to 25,000 lb to measure compressive and tensile loads at accuracies up to 0.05% of full scale. Plug and Sense technology combines the core sensing functionality with integrated computing and communication modules to offer simplicity and ease of use in a rugged, low-profile package.
