Med device requires plenty of partnerships
Major advances in cardiac surgical procedures continue to make headlines as new products are developed that are less invasive, easier to use, and produce more effective patient outcomes. Enpath Medical's patented FasTac Flex, molded by Minnesota Rubber and Plastics, provides surgeons with extra mobility and range of motion in placing and affixing pacemaker leads on the heart’s surface. With 32 components in the final assembly, the product is a good example of a growing trend in the medical device industry — the partnering of a product's complete manufacturing with a qualified and experienced supplier. Understanding power LED lifetime analysis
When designing LED-based lighting systems, engineers need to understand LED lumen maintenance and mortality in similar terms to those used when designing with conventional light sources. However, comparable data has been nearly impossible to find. In addition, designers need extra information to predict the lifetime of LEDs under a variety of operating conditions. This article provides lighting designers with an understanding of a new tool introduced by Philips Lumileds lighting that simplifies the process, allowing full flexibility in design options. Elastomer makes golf shoe cleaner a tough player
Golfers have been known to brave some pretty bad weather to play the game they love, but an injection-molded shoe cleaner for mounting on the floorboard of a golf car takes even harsher treatment, according to its developer Carolina Engineered Products. SoftSwipe cleaners are rubber-like, 7-in. diameter disks with molded-in rods that clean away mud, sand, and grass from non-metal spikes or cleats when golfers scrape their shoes against the cleaners. The company has enhanced the durability of SoftSwipe cleaners by switching from standard vinyl to Flexalloy PVC elastomer from the Vinyl Division of Teknor Apex Company. Read the full article

U.S. Navy searching for way to cool high-power electronics
With a major grant from the Office of Naval Research, researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute are collaborating with four other universities to address a hot topic in today's military: how to keep modern ships cool in extreme environments. Modern military ships, offices, and planes have thousands of computers, lights, and other electronics whirring and working at once, generating extremely high temperatures that require advanced cooling systems. Wheels: Actively tuning in a quieter ride
In the past, attempts to reduce the effects of noise and vibration in vehicles have been based on passive technology and the use of elastomeric springs for isolation. However, anti-vibration experts at Trelleborg, the German-based seal, damp, and protection solutions specialist, have developed an innovative noise reduction system that uses active-force cancellation, sparking considerable interest among the world's major automobile manufacturers.
