Bobcat goes lean
A major "lean" re-engineering project to improve warehousing operations and inventory accuracy, while streamlining material flow to assembly lines, is already yielding benefits for the Bobcat Company, the West Fargo, ND-based producer of small loaders, excavators, and other compact construction equipment. Six months ago, the company made a decision to outsource its warehousing and inventory support operations to Menlo Worldwide.

Get more from rapid prototyping
Engineer Chris Crowley's specialty is electromechanical design, typically of smaller high-tech products. The owner of Table Mountain Innovation of Golden, CO, consults with a variety of clients on medical and electronic device development, and he's got a lot to say about different stages of product design. For example, "everyone knows the value of rigorous functional testing of prototypes," he says. "But what they sometimes forget is the manufacturability of the part. The problem with additive processes like stereolithography is that they will faithfully reproduce parts that are difficult, expensive, or just plain impossible to injection mold."

Machine technology education rebounding?
A little over a year ago the Machining Technology program at Cape Fear Community College of Wilmington, NC, was struggling to survive with just five students in two sections. But the school's decision to shift instructional emphasis from traditional machine operating skills to computer numerical control programming and machining with a focus on Mastercam has had dramatic results. Now the college has added a third section to accommodate the 55 students currently enrolled and is looking forward to more growth. "Everyone wants CNC-qualified people," says Randy Johnson, a CFCC instructor.
