Advanced hydraulic valves bring rock-solid stability to drilling
When it comes to drilling attachments, you might say that TEI Rock Drills was as solid as, well, a rock. That is until they had a problem with the drill rigs they produce. "We were using a basic valve combination when we started making our drilling attachments," says Sue Frank, president. "Sometimes, when the user touched the handle on the attachments that employed this setup, all of the flow went to the drill at one time and caused it to move too fast, making it unsafe for the operator." The solution? Proportional valves.

Adopting a lean approach
The ISO certification has become a fundamental requirement for doing business throughout the world. In their quest for quality, many companies are adopting lean manufacturing methodologies including 5S, Kaizen events, and Six Sigma projects to help improve internal processes and productivity levels. But in their zeal to launch new quality-improvement initiatives, some businesses are inadvertently putting their quality management system (QMS) on the back burner.

Holes in tanker solve myriad problems
University of Michigan researchers are investigating a radical new design for cargo ships that would eliminate ballast tanks. Instead of hauling potentially contaminated water across the ocean, then dumping it in a Great Lakes port, a ballast-free ship would create a constant flow of local seawater through a network of large pipes, called trunks, that runs from the bow to the stern, below the waterline.

Wheels: Pneumatic flow control could boost heavy-truck fuel efficiency

Diesel fuel prices approaching $5 a gallon — and the resulting economic impact on products transported by truck — have created renewed interest in fuel-saving technologies developed during the past decade at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI). Use of pressurized air "active flow control" techniques combined with conventional aerodynamic streamlining could improve fuel efficiency by 8% to 12% in the heavy trucks used to transport a broad range of products.

5-Star Product: Captive-Joiner for fastening sheet metal panels
The 1-035SL Captive-Joiner 9.5 SNAP-LINE offers all the benefits of traditional captive screws plus improved ease of use by the end-user, significant reduction in time of installation, and reduction in the risk of damage to sensitive electronic equipment housed inside enclosures. The Captive-Joiner also functions as a slam-to-close latch, requiring just a simple push of the panel against the frame to ensure latching.
