Off-Highway: Metal gets the boot on extreme Wolverine
ATV
Dumur Industries
replaced the metal cab of the Wolverine amphibious, tracked vehicle with
thermoformed plastic components, increasing the size of the enclosure,
while reducing both cost and weight. Cold-weather operations produced
cracking at attachment points in components formed from traditional ABS
sheet with an ASA cap layer. Read the full article
Off-Highway: Computer sim helps design high-efficiency
air pre-cleaner
Donaldson
engineers set out to design an air pre-cleaner product line for off-highway
vehicles that extends air filter life and improves fuel economy by
providing higher separation efficiency and lower pressure drop than
existing designs, now named TopSpin. Company engineers used computational
fluid dynamics (CFD) to model the flow of air and particles through the
pre-cleaner. Read the full article

Lens and fiber optics make stab at indoor solar
cooking
Anyone who says
there's no free lunch has never used a solar cooker. Not only is the fuel
free, but a solar stove doesn't generate greenhouse gases from burning
fossil fuels. But creating a viable, affordable solar cooker is not all
sunshine, as senior mechanical engineering students at The University of
Arizona discovered. Their novel approach was full of steps — and
missteps — into the light. Read the full article
Wheels: Sensor for synchronized hydraulics is
magnifique
MTS Systems
Corp., Sensors Division is providing its MH mobile hydraulic
magnetostrictive sensors to France's FAUN Environnement for the vehicle
manufacturer's VARIOPRESS rear-loader series of trash haulers. The
VARIOPRESS utilizes the TWINLIFT hydraulic lifting and discharging system
that ensures speedy truck filling using a fully automated dual lifting
system. Read the full article
5-Star Product: Improve assembly design using dynamic
slicing
Ever wish that
you had the ability to see into and through components and assemblies to
instantly identify problems and interferences early in your design? Well
now you can — all sliced and pretty. With Version 13, VX CAD/CAM has
introduced an assembly-level display tool that lets users toggle the
display mode of any component. A user can see inside a gear box or through
a mold plate, for example, instead of hiding parts. Read the full article
Engineer's Toolbox: Powerful FEA tool for Pro/ENGINEER
users
ALGOR DesignCheck
is free, time-limited finite element analysis (FEA) software that allows
engineers and designers to perform linear static stress analysis of
single-part CAD models. Read the full article

Innovation Revolutionary changes in Japanese manufacturing with digital
data
The Japanese
economy has finally started to gain back strength after a prolonged
recession, which results in its so-called "10 lost years." From
the lessons learned during the bubble economy, Japanese companies are now
aiming at "lean" cost-efficient and profitable businesses and are
developing a dislike for excess staff and facilities. On the other hand,
the globalization of businesses is increasingly pressuring companies to
replenish goods as soon as they have been sold. Read the full article
