Easy-flow
plastic delights designers
The "Myto" cantilever chair, the brainchild of much-celebrated designer Konstantin Grcic, is made completely of the new injection-moldable plastic Ultradur High Speed from BASF. The new instant classic will be exhibited at the world's largest plastics show,
"K," in Düsseldorf in October. "The chair's delicate design combined with its high strength was only possible with this material," says Grcic.
"It gives me completely new freedom for the design." The really special thing about Ultradur High Speed is that it flows twice as far as standard plastic grades when heated, making the production of components made of the material more cost effective and energy efficient. Read the full article

LEDs and occupancy sensors help Wal-Mart achieve dramatic energy savings
In an effort to meet their goal of eliminating 30%
of the energy used by stores, Wal-Mart engineers
have been working diligently to identify areas for
potential energy savings. LED lighting coupled with
occupancy sensing controls for refrigerated food
cases has proven to be so successful in terms of
energy savings, improved performance, and reduced
maintenance that the company plans to incorporate
the design in all new stores and retrofit cases in over 450 existing stores by the end of 2007. Read the full article
Anritsu cuts RF shield cost with die cast parts
A global innovator of test and measurement devices for telecommunications, optical, and wireless systems has replaced traditionally machined RF shields with precision die cast parts in its handheld cable and antenna analyzers. The move is designed to reduce the unit cost of about a dozen different shields across the Site Master series of analyzers, an investment that the company estimates to gain payback on within six months. MIT architects design building with "digital water" walls
Imagine a building that features liquid curtains for walls curtains that not only can be programmed to display images or messages but can also sense an approaching object and automatically part to let it through. MIT architects and engineers have designed such a building, and it will be unveiled at next year's international exhibition in Spain. The water walls consist of a row of closely spaced solenoid valves along a pipe suspended in the air. The valves can be opened and closed, at high frequency via computer control, to produce a curtain of falling water with gaps at specified locations. Read the full article
