Noisy Bearings?
Smalley wave springs are ideal for bearing preload. The wave spring preloads the bearing through its outer race, taking up play in the bearing. Preloading will reduce bearing damage, wear, noise and vibration. The wave spring prevents sliding between the rolling elements. Bearing springs come in metric sizes to match popular bearing sizes. Smalley has over 150 standard springs available, from 16 mm to 580 mm. Specials are available for unique bearing sizes with No-Tooling-Charges™. Visit Smalley online.

Improving PLC compatibility and function flexibility
When original equipment manufacturer Weiler Engineering upgraded the drive systems on its aseptic blow-fill-seal machines, a problem with its existing controller compatibility was limiting the functionality of its equipment. A one-on-one PLC-integration engineering solution by Siemens not only provided the machine-operation interface Weiler Engineering needed, but also significantly expanded its applications flexibility.

Scratch protection is emerging de facto standard for handheld devices
Scratch-resistant screens are one of the relatively rare feature enhancements that add value to a device without making it more complicated to use. Diamondshield is a water-clear coating developed by the Diamonex Products division of Morgan Advanced Ceramics (MAC) that gives polycarbonate and acrylic screens — and other plastic components such as keypads and casings — a previously unattainable scratch-resistance, comparable to glass, while maintaining the weight savings, impact resistance, formability, and other benefits of plastic.

New ORNL roof system means savings for homeowners
Homeowners could see their summer utility bills fall by 8% or more with a new roof and attic system being developed at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory. From an energy-efficiency perspective, roof technology has not progressed substantially in hundreds of years, but that is changing with the use of active thermal mass components, reflective pigments and coatings, subventing, radiant barriers, and other novel techniques being tested by a team led by Bill Miller and Jan Kosny of ORNL's Building Envelopes group.

Wheels: More auto parts ditch metal
Cooling-water pipes are exposed to high temperatures and an aggressive environment. At the same time they are required to provide long-term leak resistance despite internal pressures of almost 2 bar. Consequently, they have been traditionally manufactured from metal. As an alternative, component and systems specialist Hutchinson (Mannheim, Germany), in close cooperation with Volkswagen, has developed a polymer pipe made of a heat- and hydrolysis-stabilized grade of DuPont Zytel nylon.
