ID/OD Retaining Ring Lock:  Try a spiral retaining ring in both an internal and external groove at the same time. Install the ring in one groove and then compress the ring with the mating component into the second groove. When the grooves meet the ring snaps into place creating a low cost, hidden, high strength, tamper proof rotating joint. Visit Smalley Steel Ring Company online for more information.

Process Management

From Crisis to Control: 4 Tips for Strategic Project Management.  Recent findings show that over 75% of organizations that set up a Project Management Office shut it down within 3 years. Make sure your organization doesn't make the same mistake.  Read the full article.

Plug-In Servo Couplings:   Tedious coupling access holes in motor mounting flanges can be completely eliminated.  Two-piece blind mate servo couplings from R+W allow for motors and gearboxes to be axially plugged into their driven elements.  This time saving design is also ideal for food and packaging aplications, since the coupling is easily sealed off from moisture and contaminants.  Visit R+W online for more information.

Fluid Power: Application Xtra

World’s Largest Paper-Making Machine Has "Jumbo Jet" Sophistication.

The concept of the printed word on paper might not have changed much since the Gutenberg Bible was produced in 1455, but production techniques have changed fundamentally. Metso Corp.’s PM12 uses 15,000 control elements handling 75,000 control signals, and operates six shifts with only nine operators per shift. Read the full article.

CD Couplings Conquer High-Torque, High Reverse Loads Applications.
Mark Lorenc needed “the most durable coupling” he could find. The design engineer from Merritt Plywood Machinery Inc., Lockport, NY, was working on plans for the company’s new MS-40 high-speed vertical slicers. The design challenges for the servo system: precision positioning and slicing, high reverse loads, and continuous operation.
