Extend Bearing Life. Single turn wave springs are ideal for bearing preload. The wave spring preloads the bearing through its outer race, taking up play in the bearing. By preloading a bearing you will reduce bearing damage, wear, noise and vibration. Smalley has over 150 standard bearing springs, from 16mm to 580mm. Specials are available.  Visit Smalley Steel Ring Company online for more information.
Engineer tunes in to free satellite radio!
Congratulations to Gary Steinmetz, a manufacturing engineer at Enidine Inc. in Orchard Park, N.Y., for being chosen as the winner of our October "Help us to tune in to our readers" contest. Gary will receive an XM Satellite Radio with car kit and a 6-month prepaid service subscription.

Gary has worked at Enidine (which he loyally describes as "a world leader in the design and manufacture of energy absorption and vibration isolation solutions in many markets, including Aviation, Industrial, Defense, and Rail") for almost 20 years. He designs and sometimes builds tooling, fixtures, and machines for the assembly floor and test departments. "Everything from simple O-ring installation tools to PLC or computer-controlled machines," he says. "Most of the designs are unique and always challenging."

Obtaining a Short-Circuit Current Rating for Control Panels

Changes to the 2005 NEC will make SCCR a key criterion for design. Discussions about fault-current studies, short-circuit current ratings, and available fault currents may become routine among many designers of industrial machinery and control equipment, due to changes in the National Electrical Code, specifically Article 409. The 2005 NEC now requires that industrial control panels, HVAC equipment, and industrial machinery controls have a short-circuit current rating (or SCCR) on its nameplate. Read the full article.
