Braking with tradition: Siemens VDO's by-wire system coming this decade
Siemens VDO has developed a vehicle braking concept consisting of about 30% hardware and 70% electronics — a 180° change from traditional hydraulic braking systems. The company has developed the electronic wedge brake (EWB), a low-power/low-energy 12-volt by-wire braking technology that uses a car's kinetic energy to stop itself, eliminating the need for hydraulic pipes, brake cylinders, brake boosters, or traditional antilock braking control and braking fluid.

The Mercedes of Motion Control
Sophisticated, compact, performance-driven…that's the 3003/3006 Motion Controllers from MicroMo… now even more efficient, plus the optional feature of being operated via a RS232 or CAN interface. With electronics based on a digital signal processor, these motion controllers deliver precise positioning and low, low speeds. Take a test drive at MicroMo.

Measuring motion
Accelerometers are essential sensors found in a wide range of applications from consumer products to rigorous vibration testing. This article discusses the different technologies used to sense acceleration and the types of processes used to build the devices.

Electric Replacement for Hydraulics!
Exlar's electric linear actuators deliver the force of hydraulics and the speed of pneumatics. The patented roller screw technology offers peak forces in excess of 40,000 lbf., speeds to 60 in/sec, and stroke lengths to 96 inches, all with the ease and reliability of servo control. Visit Exlar online for more information.

Hydrogen fuel cells power unmanned aerial vehicle
Georgia Institute of Technology researchers have conducted successful test flights of a hydrogen-powered unmanned aircraft believed to be the largest to fly on a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell using compressed hydrogen. The fuel-cell system that powers the 22-foot wingspan aircraft generates only 500 watts. "That raises a lot of eyebrows," said Adam Broughton, a research engineer who is working on the project in Georgia Tech's Aerospace Systems Design Laboratory (ASDL).

Testing Munchkins: Performance under pressure
Steve Asselin, a project manager and specialist in automated test measurement, came to Heat Transfer Products, Inc. of East Freetown, MA, with his initial assignment being to design a production line for one of the company’s most popular product lines, Munchkin water heaters. Asselin knew that the most important aspect of his job would take place during the final stages of assembly: the testing stage during which each boiler would be checked for its ability to literally perform under pressure.
