Computer sim helps give BMW Z4 an extra 13 hp
Dinan, a leading North American BMW tuner, recently developed a Ram Air Duct designed to deliver greater volumes of cool air to the intake system of a Z4 as road speed increases. The Z4 uses a sensor to measure the air mass going into the engine, and testing showed that during heavy rain the original concept design directed too much water at this sensor. Dinan engineers worked with consultants at ANSYS to simulate the flow of air and water through the intake. Read the full article
The performance of a lifetime The 3500 series (size 14) double stack hybrid linear actuators provide higher force, longer life and improved performance. The various patent pending designs deliver exceptional performance and new linear motion design opportunities. Three designs are available, captive, non-captive and external linear versions. The 35000 Series is available in a wide variety of resolutions - from 0.00012" (.003048 mm) per step to 0.00192" (.048768 mm) per step. The motors can also be microstepped for even finer resolutions. The Size 14 actuator delivers thrust of up to 50 lbs. (23 Kg). For more information visit Haydon Switch & Instrument online.
Go paintless: Visualfx special effects resin leverages appeal
When Sally Shower Equipment Co. began to design a new shower enclosure featuring a steam generator that was aimed at the upscale market, it became clear that a new material was urgently needed. After learning about Visualfx special effects resin portfolio from SABIC (formerly GE Plastics), Sally turned to SABIC for assistance in identifying a new approach to color. In addition to unique aesthetic appeal, Geloy Visualfx resin gave Sally the ability to maintain consistent high-quality color across each component of the Steam Bathroom, and to avoid the color shift that can occur with traditional resins and paint. Vehicle barrier technologies tested for border fence
A joint effort involving a group of Sandia National Laboratories researchers to test and evaluate various types of fencing along the U.S. border with Mexico is helping decision makers determine appropriate fencing solutions. The effort got under way in April with a series of crash tests to evaluate how the fences will look and perform. The tests stem from the government's commitment to deploy hundreds of miles of fencing along high-traffic, high-risk stretches of the border. Read the full article
