Using IEPE accelerometers with modern DAQs
There are several factors to consider when using an IEPE (Integrated Electronics Piezoelectric) accelerometer, particularly when used with newly available integrated signal conditioner/data acquisition (DAQ) systems. For starters, unlike piezoelectric (PE) charge-type accelerometers, IEPE accelerometers require power to operate, so the user will need constant current to properly power the device. Noise and frequency response are other factors. Read the full article

Actuators leverage turn of the screw
Thiele Technologies, a leader in packaging technology and equipment, recently faced the problem of how to compensate for inconsistent bag dimensions on its popular modular bag filling and sealing system. They found their solution in four custom electric screw linear actuators from Tolomatic that precisely position incoming empty bags. Read the full article

Novel flexible charge pump produces electricity
Researchers have developed a new type of small-scale electric power generator able to produce alternating current through the cyclical stretching and releasing of zinc oxide wires encapsulated in a flexible plastic substrate with two ends bonded. The new “flexible charge pump” generator is the fourth generation of devices designed to produce electrical current by using the piezoelectric properties of zinc oxide structures to harvest mechanical energy from the environment.
