Thermal sim shows best potting compound costs 50% less
C-MAC MicroTechnology used Flotherm thermal simulation software from The Mechanical Analysis Division of Mentor Graphics Corporation (formerly Flomerics) to determine that the thermal requirements of a stacked module could be met with a potting compound that cost only half the amount of the default choice. Simulation proved to be much faster and less expensive than the alternative of building and testing prototypes. Read the full article

Aching-back relief rests on precision bearings
At some point in 80% of people’s lives, back pain will be their worst enemy. In many cases, the cause is pressure exerted on nerves branching out from the spinal column into the lower or upper extremities. High-tech approaches to back pain relief include spinal decompression. Axiom Worldwide's professional spinal decompression system, the DRX9000, features a mattress that moves via linear bearings on precision ground shafts from NB Corporation. Read the full article

Renewable energy reaped from slow water currents
Slow-moving ocean and river currents could be a new, reliable, and affordable alternative energy source. A University of Michigan engineer has made a machine that works like a fish to turn potentially destructive vibrations in fluid flows into clean, renewable power. Read the full article

Wheels: Ford tries electric rack drive steering
Ford Motor Co. is saying goodbye to some conventional steering mechanical and hydraulic components. Let's all bow our heads for the passing of the steering pump, pulley, belt, reservoir, and hydraulic lines. They are no more when it comes to the Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan cars. 5-Star Product: Linear actuators use The FORCE
Industrial applications involving linear actuation frequently require the precise measurement of the load being applied by the actuator. Historically, this has been accomplished by placing a load cell between the actuator and the connection to the workpiece. Not any more. Exlar has introduced an integral force measuring option for its high-torque, long-life GSX and I Series of electromechanical linear actuators. Read the full article
