Boom Supersonic's Overture plane.
Boom Supersonic, a Denver-based aerospace company that aims to build the world's fastest civil aircraft, is partnering up with Rolls-Royce to explore the pairing of a Rolls-Royce propulsion system (turbofan engines) with Boom's flagship supersonic passenger aircraft called Overture.
The goal of the new agreement is to work together to identify the propulsion system that would complement Boom's Overture airframe. The teams will also examine certain key aspects of the propulsion system. The teams will investigate whether an existing engine architecture can be adapted for supersonic flight, while Boom's internal team continues to develop the airframe configuration. Rolls-Royce was responsible for the engines on the now-defunct Concorde supersonic plane.

The Overture is a Mach 2.2, 55-passenger, single-aisle supersonic transport plane with an estimated 4,500-nautical-mile range. Boom thinks it can get the plane in the sky somewhere between 2025 and 2027. A flight from Tokyo to Seattle in this plane should take 4 hours and 30 minutes, as opposed to the current flight time of 8 hours and 30 minutes. Boom says fares should be similar to those paid to fly on today's long-haul business-class flights.
Together, the two companies are trying to build a plane with a net-zero carbon future. That entails a partnership with Prometheus Fuels, a company that has developed a technology that economically removes CO2 from the air and uses clean electricity to turn it into jet fuel.

But Boom isn't ready to build the Overture just yet. First, the company is working on its 1:3-scale XB-1 prototype test aircraft. That plane, history's first independently developed civil supersonic aircraft, is nearing completion. The design, build, and test phases of XB-1 are intended to inform the design of Overture, Boom's supersonic commercial airliner, and lessons from XB-1 have already helped optimize Overture's development.

XB-1 has a planned rollout this fall. Test flights are planned to take place in a supersonic corridor stretching across the Mojave Desert. As part of the partnership, Flight Research, Inc. (FRI) will provide flight test support to Boom with a T-38 Talon, a two-seat, twin-jet supersonic trainer, for pilot proficiency training as well as a chase aircraft during XB-1's flight test program.
The XB-1 uses three GE J85-15 engines. Both the XB-1 and Overture will featuring advanced, thermally stable carbon composite airframes. Overture will only fly at supersonic speeds over the ocean, eliminating community exposure to sonic booms.
