New high-performance metals for 3D printing
3D Systems has added two new materials to its materials portfolio. Certified HX is a high-performance nickel alloy that contains a higher percentage of molybdenum (up to 9.5%) vs. other nickel alloys, which enhances strength and resistance to corrosion, creep deformation, cracking, and oxidation in hot-zone environments. Certified CuCr2.4 is a high-strength, corrosion-resistant copper alloy that is significantly stronger than pure copper and easier to process. Both materials are certified for use with the company's DMP Flex 350 and DMP Factory 350 3D printers. Applications include industrial gas turbines, consumer goods, aerospace and defense, and automotive.

Megaton-scale expandable CO2-removal facility planned for Wyoming
Will capturing CO2 from the atmosphere and storing it underground really make any difference to a climate that is heating up? A tech company called CarbonCapture that develops direct air capture (DAC) systems using a modular open systems architecture wants to find out.
Along with its partner, carbon storage developer Frontier Carbon Solutions, CarbonCapture is building an expandable CO2 removal facility in Wyoming that aims to remove 5 million tons of atmospheric CO2 annually by 2030. The captured CO2 is permanently stored underground or used to make products that need clean CO2, such as synthetic fuels, carbon black, and even concrete. The system features plug-and-play sorbent cartridges, programmable reactors, and container-sized modules (shipping units). The container modules can be groped into functional clusters forming ever-growing arrays.
"We plan to have our first DAC modules fielded by the end of next year and to continue installing capacity as quickly as modules come off our production line," said Adrian Corless, CEO and CTO, CarbonCapture. "Our goal is to leverage economies of scale to offer the lowest priced DAC-based carbon removal credits in the market."
According to CarbonCapture, Wyoming was selected as the project's location due to the broad availability of renewable and zero-carbon energy sources as well as the favorable regulatory and operating environment for carbon storage. The project is expected to be operational by late 2023, at which point it would be the first atmospheric carbon removal facility to use Class VI wells for permanent storage as well as the first massively scalable DAC project in the United States.
The partnership, named Project Bison, will deploy CarbonCapture's DAC modules atop Frontier's CO2 transportation and storage infrastructure in Wyoming. Developed over multiple phases through 2030, the project wants to meet the growing demand for carbon removal credits.
A federal interagency working group has designated parts of Wyoming as some of the nation's most impacted communities from coal mine and power plant closures. CarbonCapture is working closely with community stakeholders to ensure that Project Bison offers well-paying energy transition-related jobs and preserves the wildlife and natural beauty that makes Wyoming unique.
CarbonCapture's technology platform allows for a broad range of sorbent options, plug-and-play upgrades, mass production, scalability, and rapid technology iterations. The company's systems run on zero-emissions energy, capturing atmospheric CO2 for either permanent atmospheric carbon removal or for producing low-carbon synthetic fuels.
