Lamborghini says hello Temerario, goodbye Huracán

Lamborghini is replacing its best-selling model ever, the Huracán, with a new powerhouse: the 907-hp twin-turbo V8 hybrid Temerario that features the perfect blend of "blistering speed and luxurious comfort." It has big shoes to fill, but with a 0- to 62-mph time of 2.7 sec and being the first production super sports car to achieve 10,000 rpm, things are looking bright.

As a hybrid, the Temerario (which translated in Italian means "reckless") combines the best of both worlds: an entirely new powertrain based on a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine combined with three electric motors, producing a total hybrid power output of over 900 hp and 800 Nm of torque. The mid-engine plug-in hybrid produces a highly responsive "torque-filled" linear progression through its eight gears, with maximum combustion power of 789 hp achieved between 9,000 and 9,750 rpm. A new dual-clutch transmission is incorporated, while a flat plane crankshaft typically used in racing engines ensures high torque and smooth running at low engine speeds, with an engaging and emotive engine sound. Temerario has a top speed of over 211 mph. The Temerario is the second vehicle in Lamborghini's HPEV (High Performance Electrified Vehicle) range, following the Revuelto. The exposed engine, which has become a hallmark of the brand, looks as cool (and menacing) as ever.

The new engine is now one of the most powerful in the segment. The electric motor in P1 position (between the V8 engine and the gearbox), ensures immediate response starting from low engine speed and continues consistently through gear shifts, working as a torque-gap filler and improving the transient response, giving the sensation of linear and limitless progression up to 10,000 revs. Thanks to the two large turbochargers, efficiency and performance are increased at top speeds. These are located compactly in the V of the engine as a "hot V8" to optimize the packaging and thermal management.

The achievement of such high revs is derived from technical solutions drawn from the world of motorsport, such as the flat-plane crankshaft that ensures optimal fluid dynamics due to an even firing order between the two banks and delivering a unique and engaging sound. The titanium connecting rods, thanks to the excellent properties of this material in terms of strength and lightness, help to reduce weight and the rotating masses. The racing-inspired design also includes finger followers coated in DLC (Diamond Like Carbon), a material that increases hardness and therefore strength, so that they can withstand speeds up to 11,000 rpm.

The maximum boost pressure of the turbochargers is 2.5 bar (abs). The turbines are controlled with an electrical wastegate and a wheel-speed sensor. Lamborghini has designed air filter boxes with tubular cartridges, making them extremely compact to create space and become even more efficient.

At the heart of the crankshaft housing is a flat-plane crankshaft with a 180-degree angle between the crankshaft bends. This crankshaft, which is typically used in racing engines, ensures optimal fluidodynamic behavior due to even firing orders in comparison to the cross-plane crankshaft. Titanium conrods reduce the rotating masses and offer excellent material properties in terms of strength and lightness, reducing weight. The engine casting material consists of A357+Cu, the same used in motorsport applications.

A newly designed water-cooling system ensures a balanced temperature regime. The internal cooling of the cylinder heads has been extremely refined using 3D printing technology for the casting core, allowing a uniform cooling of the combustion chamber and high knock resistance.

Overall, Lamborghini has succeeded in developing a new V8 biturbo that combines the pronounced linearity of the rev development in the previous naturally aspirated Lamborghini V10 with the enormous power and torque of a modern turbo engine.

With increased passenger comfort and roominess, a new high-strength, ultra-light aluminum alloy spaceframe system increases torsional rigidity by 20% and contributes to exceptional driving dynamics. Lamborghini says aerodynamic load, particularly at the rear, is significantly increased with a +118% improved efficiency compared to the Huracán EVO, increasing to +158% with the optional, lightweight Alleggerita track package. The Alleggerita's weight reduction of 27.9 lb compared to the standard Temerario can be increased up to a 55 lb via other optional lightweight interior elements and carbon rims. The Alleggerita pack also includes a splitter and side skirts made of carbon fiber reinforced polymers.

The clean-sheet design is focused on slicing through the air with unmatched aerodynamic finesse, taking Lamborghini's iconic style to bold new heights. Every component of Temerario's drivetrain is crafted for peak performance, making every drive "an adrenaline-fueled thrill ride."

Temerario is equipped with 20-in. rims at the front and 21-in. rims at the rear, which are available in three different designs and materials: cast rims (three colors), forged (four colors), and carbon. A range of carbon fiber elements for exteriors and interiors is offered: front splitter, mirror caps, side upper vents, rear diffuser for the outside, and central tunnel, instrument cluster, air vents, door switch frame, steering wheel, steering column cover, and gearshift for the inside. With the alternative carbon pack, owners get a rear diffuser, rear-view mirror caps, and carbon side air intake covers that contribute to lightweighting the vehicle.

Owners get to try and refine 13 different driving mode experiences and three new dedicated hybrid system driving modes: Recharge, Hybrid, and Performance. Launch Control and Drift Mode are included.

Inside, Lamborghini's "Feel like a pilot" design aesthetic is thick. The Temerario cockpit features an ultra-luxe balance between digital screens and tactile buttons, but drivers will always feel like it is race day. Prominent materials include carbon, leather, and Corsatex by Dinamica suede. A new Lamborghini steering wheel allows the driver to operate Launch Control and other driving functions with a simple touch of a button.

With over 400 exterior colors, tailored interior options, and bespoke trim selections, personalization possibilities are aimed at maximum satisfaction.

The Temerario base price is just over $350,000. Unlike much of the car market, sales of Lamborghinis are strong and growing, with the under-40 crowd a key driver. Imagine! Learn more at lamborghini.com/en-en/models/temerario.
