Leak detection sensor for multiple HVAC refrigerants

Sensata Technologies has launched the Sensata Resonix RGD sensor, the first leak detection sensor with UL certification for multiple A2L refrigerant gases used in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment. It supports HVAC manufacturers' transition to refrigerants with a lower global warming impact. Typically mounted near the evaporator coil, the new sensor measures the acoustic resonance of the surrounding air in real time and can trigger mitigation, such as a fan, when A2L gas is detected.

What is 3D-MID? Molded parts with integrated electronics from HARTING

3D-MID (three-dimensional mechatronic integrated devices) tech combines electronic and mechanical functionalities into a single, 3D component. It replaces the traditional printed circuit board and opens up many new opportunities. It takes injection-molded parts and uses laser-direct structuring to etch areas of conductor structures, which are filled with a copper plating process to create very precise electronic circuits. HARTING, the technology's developer, says it's "Like a PCB, but 3D." Tons of possibilities.

Johnson Controls unveils new battery system for Advanced Start-Stop vehicles

Johnson Controls expanded its automotive battery offerings by introducing a Lithium Titanate battery at the North American International Auto Show in January. The company's latest 12-V technology, which is a collaboration with Toshiba, will power Advanced Start-Stop vehicles. The Lithium Titanate chemistry is effective at quickly recharging, works well in a wide range of temperatures, and can be easily integrated into a vehicle's 12-V electrical system. Toshiba, with its Super Charge Ion Battery (SCiB) technology, is the established market leader for Lithium Titanate.

An Advanced Start-Stop system has two batteries. A 12-V Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) or Enhanced Flooded Battery (EFB) starts the engine and supplies power to accessories such as lights, navigation systems, and radios. The 12-V Lithium Titanate battery primarily accepts and stores regenerative braking energy during vehicle deceleration, enabling greater power and load-management capabilities.

"With an Advanced Start-Stop system, drivers could save up to 8 percent every time they fill up their gas tank as the batteries enable the engine to shut off more frequently and for longer periods of time," said Lisa Bahash, group vice president and general manager Original Equipment, Johnson Controls Power Solutions. "This is also a great solution for our customers, because the technology allows for greater fuel savings without major changes to the existing powertrain and electrical systems."

The 12-V battery systems will be produced starting in 2018.
