Braking News: New Nissan LEAF will feature single-pedal driving for stop, slow, and go

Nissan announced July 19 that its new 2018 Nissan LEAF mass-market electric vehicle will feature e-Pedal technology that allows the driver, with the flick of a switch, to turn the regular accelerator pedal into a single control for acceleration, deceleration, and stopping.

Sound simple and yet confusing? We thought so too.

The pedal tech relies heavily on Nissan's driver-assistance technology called ProPILOT Assist, which aims to reduce the hassle of stop-and-go highway driving. ProPILOT Assist supports drivers by helping control acceleration, braking, and steering during single-lane driving on the highway -- think of it as extra levels of autonomy built into cruise control.

"With continued advances in sensor and processing technology, more of the driving task will eventually be able to transfer from the driver to the system and ultimately allow the driver to do something other than drive the vehicle," said Andy Christensen, senior manager, Nissan Technical Center North America in Michigan, earlier this year when Nissan held a special forum for U.S. lawmakers, regulators, and other U.S. government officials that explored the future of autonomous vehicles.

With e-Pedal engaged, drivers simply press on the gas to accelerate, ease up on the pedal to slow down, and take the foot totally off the gas to stop.

When activated, e-Pedal will also allow drivers to bring the car to a complete stop even on hills, stay in position, and resume driving instantly. Nissan estimates that "drivers can cover 90% of their driving needs with the e-Pedal."

During e-Pedal mode, the "normal" brake pedal remains active and available for hard braking.

Although an alien concept to many drivers, Green Car Reports says that this technology is not new and that versions of it have been featured in the Tesla Roadster and the 2014 BMW i3 electric cars. You can read that short report here. The article also says that the feature "has proven very popular among more experienced electric-car owners."

Nissan released the following teaser video in conjunction with the e-Pedal announcement.

The fully electric 2017 Nissan LEAF can go 107 miles on a single charge of its 30-kWh battery pack. The new 2018 version, which should be available from dealers before the end of the year, is rumored to feature racier styling, the new e-Pedal tech, and a 60-kWh battery pack that should take drivers just over 200 miles on single charge.
