Exceptionally high speed and dynamics
With its speed and torque, the new AM3248 stepper motor from FAULHABER raises the bar in terms of performance and dimensions. Offering up to 10,000 rpm, it can achieve five times the speed of comparable stepper motors. Combined with a gearhead reduction of 100:1, it supplies a torque of 5 Nm. The motor delivers these values with a diameter of just 32 mm and is ideally suited for a wide range of applications including aerospace, lab automation, large optical systems, the semiconductor industry, robotics, and 3D printing.
NASA Armstrong assists with complex F/A-18E Super Hornet loads testing
NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center's Flight Loads Lab is working on its most complex loads calibration tests yet on an F/A-18E Super Hornet to determine how the fighter jet will perform if proposed upgrades are incorporated. Testing includes the operation of 84 hydraulic actuators during the performance of 87 load cases targeting the wings, vertical tails, and horizontal tails of the aircraft.

Strain sensor can help prevent structural disasters
Developed to help prevent civil disasters and save lives, HEIDENHAIN's ESR digital strain sensor monitors the structural health of bridges, buildings, wind turbines, and even automation equipment. This fatigue-free measurement concept provides high-resolution digital input into a system of choice. With a renewed emphasis on improving the national infrastructure, the digital ESR strain sensor is the perfect option, since it offers significantly higher accuracy and increased robustness when compared to conventional strain and vibration gauges. It also offers transferable mounting, allowing users to move the one-gauge sensor to multiple locations.
Cool Tools: All-in-one laser tracker
Exact Metrology now offers high-performance laser tracker technology in a portable and easy-to-use form factor thanks to the Leica Absolute Tracker AT960. This is a robust, all-in-one laser tracker that fits in a single flight case. Offering high-speed dynamic measurement as standard, it is a complete solution for six degrees of freedom (6DoF) probing, scanning, and automated inspection, as well as reflector measurement. Combined with the Real-Time Feature Pack and Leica T-Mac, the AT960 becomes a laser tracker that meets the deterministic measurement data-delivery requirements of high-end automated installations.
New 48-V version of heavy-duty Electrak HD actuator
Thomson Industries has announced the availability of a 48-V option for its Electrak HD electric actuator. The added voltage capacity designed into this actuator provides motion control designers with new flexibility in integrating heavy-duty actuators that draw less current. The Electrak HD linear actuator platform provides robust lifting performance up to 16 kN. Onboard electronics eliminate the need for standalone controls. Applications include automated guided vehicles (AGVs), forklifts, agricultural equipment, and factory automation.
LEGO Technic: McLaren Formula 1 Race Car
Designed in close collaboration with engineering experts from LEGO and McLaren Racing, the new McLaren Formula 1 Race Car is the first LEGO Technic incarnation of an F1 car and is fully modeled on the life-size version. It features a V6 cylinder engine with moving pistons, steering activated from the cockpit, suspension, and differential. The 1,432-piece model is over 25 in. long and comes complete with sponsor stickers. Available March 1.

Optimize large mechanical misalignments, get hidden benefits
C-Flex Couplings combine the best qualities of disc, beam, and bellows couplings in a unique and economical design. Made to couple two rotating shafts together, these couplings can accommodate large misalignments while transmitting high torque loads with zero backlash. Benefits include lower energy usage and less-frequent bearing failure, since less stress is placed upon bearings. Constructed using high-strength hardened stainless steel or glass impregnated polyamide flexures, these couplings require no maintenance and provide years of trouble-free life, even in contaminated environments. Flexible Pivot Bearings and Super Plastic Torsional Damping Couplings also available.
