MAHLE claims new EV motor is most durable -- can run indefinitely with high performance
Automotive supplier MAHLE says it has developed "the most durable electric motor available" for electric vehicle (EV) applications. Unique to the market, the traction motor -- with a continuous output of more than 90% of its peak output -- can run indefinitely with high performance thanks to a new cooling concept.

3D-printed metal parts go hypersonic -- at zero miles per hour
Get an insider look at how researchers at Purdue University use 3D-printed injector components from VELO3D to create Mach 6 conditions for a ground-testing facility. Their recent work demonstrates how advanced additive manufacturing is now capable of producing fully dense, end-use parts with robustness that surpasses traditional methods like casting -- making parts that can create hypersonic conditions and live to tell the tale.

Reinventing offshore wind turbines: Floating vertical-axis design
Brandon Ennis, Sandia National Laboratories' offshore wind technical lead, had a radically new idea for offshore wind turbines: instead of a tall, unwieldy tower with blades at the top, he imagined a towerless turbine with blades pulled taut like a bow. First, however, his team needed to build software capable of modeling the response of the turbine and floating platform to different wind and sea conditions.

Image - What are Crossed Roller Bearings?
What are Crossed Roller Bearings?
Learn all about HIWIN Crossed Roller Bearings that are three to four times more rigid than standard bearing solutions and are capable of handling loads in the axial, radial, and moment directions. They consist of an outer ring, an inner ring, and a plurality of rollers and spacers. The roller lies between the inner and outer ring with the spacers placed between the rollers to prevent the mutual friction between them, thereby decreasing the torque resistance for rotation. Many options are available depending on the level of rigidity needed.

Aero History: WWII Superfortress bomber engine struggles
In July 1944, a B-29 Superfortress aircraft conducted a series of flight tests at the NACA Aircraft Engine Research Laboratory (now NASA Glenn) in Cleveland, OH. The tests were part of a national effort to get the new bomber into combat as the Allies sought to turn the tide in the Pacific theater of World War II.

Image - Tech Tip: How colorants affect plastic characteristics
Tech Tip: How colorants affect plastic characteristics
One aspect of polymer characteristics that doesn't always get the consideration it deserves is the addition of colorant, because adding color to plastic can affect the behavioral properties of the material. This short article by Denny Scher of ICOMold takes a high-level look at some of the different -- and surprising -- ways colorants can have an effect on plastics.

Honing a life-saver for aerospace component maker
Fuse pins are designed to hold a jet engine on a wing, but to break away in emergency situations, allowing the engine to separate from the wing to prevent catastrophic structural failure and fires. Learn how Sonic Industries relies on Sunnen's SV-1000 honing system to produce the 5- to 7-micron ID tolerance and proprietary finish critical to this part's performance. The CNC-controlled SV-1000 allowed Sonic to meet ramped-up customer demand when it replaced a manual honing system, decreasing cycle times dramatically and increasing part production.

Image - Compact electrically controlled hydraulic actuator
Compact electrically controlled hydraulic actuator
Bosch Rexroth has expanded its range of standardized self-contained actuators by adding the CytroMotion system solution. With the help of the new compact actuator, linear movements involving forces up to 110 kN can be achieved in a range of machines and systems in smaller spaces -- more efficiently and more sustainably. These benefits can be seen over the entire life cycle. Thanks to fully electric control, CytroMotion makes engineering and commissioning easier. The efficient, power-on-demand drive and the maintenance-free, hermetically sealed design also minimize operating costs.

All about slip rings: How they work and their uses
Rotary Systems has put together a really nice basic primer on slip rings -- electrical collectors that carry a current from a stationary wire into a rotating device. Common uses are for power, proximity switches, strain gauges, video, and Ethernet signal transmission. This introduction also covers how to specify, assembly types, and interface requirements. Rotary Systems also manufactures rotary unions for fluid applications.

Neat! Join carbon materials and more -- C-Solder
C-Solder tin-based soldering alloys from Goodfellow enable the joining of carbon materials as well as carbon to metals (copper, aluminum) and aluminum to aluminum or titanium to titanium. The resulting bond is mechanically strong and electrically conductive. C-Solder is both flux-free and lead-free, has a melting point of 232 C, has excellent flow, does not leave a residue, and is not affected by cleaning solvents. Available in foil, rod, and wire forms.

How NASA tried to fix asteroid-bound Lucy spacecraft across millions of miles
Sometimes you have to decide whether to go for broke or not -- and risk making things worse. Such was the quandary for NASA engineers in October 2021, when one of two solar arrays on the freshly launched Lucy spacecraft (the first sent to study Jupiter's Trojan asteroids) wouldn't fully unfurl and latch into place.

Correct mechanical misalignments, get hidden benefits
C-Flex Couplings combine the best qualities of disc, beam, and bellows couplings in a unique and economical new design. Made to couple two rotating shafts together, these couplings can accommodate large misalignments while transmitting high torque loads with zero backlash. Benefits include lower energy usage and less-frequent bearing failure, since less stress is placed upon bearings. Constructed using high-strength hardened stainless steel or glass impregnated polyamide flexures, these couplings require no maintenance and provide years of trouble-free life, even in contaminated environments. Flexible Pivot Bearings and Super Plastic Torsional Damping Couplings also available.
