Metal foam stops .50-caliber rounds -- as good as solid steel at half the weight
Researchers from NC State have demonstrated that vehicle armor using composite metal foam (CMF) can stop ball and armor-piercing .50-caliber rounds as well as conventional steel armor, even though it weighs less than half as much -- meaning vehicle designers will be able to develop lighter military vehicles without sacrificing safety or can improve protection without making vehicles heavier.

Most powerful Ferrari ever is company's first hybrid-electric vehicle
Ferrari's latest creation is its most extreme ever. The 986-hp SF90 Stradale is the Prancing Horse's first series production plug-in hybrid-electric vehicle, and the company says it needs all-wheel drive "to allow the incredible power unleashed by the hybrid powertrain to be fully exploited." That means 0 to 60 in 2.5 sec. Wow. Hope it comes with designer neck restraints!

Mike Likes: New touchless rotary position sensors
Read the Novotechnik White Paper: How New Angular Position Sensor Technology Opens Up a Broad Range of New Applications. This white paper describes touchless (magnetic) angle sensor technology and how it can solve design problems other technologies can't. In addition, it can simplify existing on-line control applications by providing design engineers with an opportunity to reduce implementation and maintenance costs. This technology can solve problems from measuring through materials to existing shaft alignment issues. Product highlights include: touchless technology, resolution to 14-bits, 5- to 90-mm diameters, and analog and numerous digital output options.

Toolbox: Pistons made of sapphire? Who needs that -- and who can make it?
If you want a prototype piston made of metal for research purposes, you have a lot of options -- you can even 3D print your own. But what if you need something much more exotic, like the second-hardest natural material? When Mid Michigan Research had just such a need, it turned to Insaco for the company's long history of custom fabrication of sapphire precision parts, often in unusual forms.

Innovative rod seals enhance hydraulic and electromechanical aviation actuator performance
Rod seals for cylinders and actuators seal the applied system pressure toward the atmospheric side. They perform a critical function in preventing external leakage that may contaminate the immediate environment. The rod seals LB and LS from Parker Hannifin have been specially developed for the safety-critical applications in aviation and offer high reliability and wear resistance due to their seal geometry and material selection.

UV-protected and waterproof panel mount indicators
Visual Communications Company (VCC) recently announced the addition of its new PML50 Series Waterproof LED panel mount indicator (PMI). The new semi-dome indicator offers the same great features as the other PMIs in the PML50 family, with the added bonus of UV protection. This PMI has a white diffused lens for optimal side distance viewing and UV-resistant lens for superior performance in outdoor harsh environments -- and it will not discolor or fade. It achieves full brightness in microseconds, even in daylight viewing conditions. Ideal for a range of industries where outdoor status indication is crucial, including maritime, oil, gas, transportation, and industrial.

How HondaJet used NASA facilities for over-the-wing engine mount development
These days, computers handle a lot of the work for designing an airplane, but when it comes to seeing how well the new design will really handle in the air, there's nothing like a real-life test in a wind tunnel. NASA's National Transonic Facility is one of the best, and when the agency's engineers aren't using it to test their own aeronautic innovations, private companies are sometimes able to use the available space.

How Nord-Lock washers work
Can you get a design and functional edge with a wedge? In this animated video, Nord-Lock explains the principle behind their original wedge-locking technology, which secures bolted joints -- even when exposed to severe vibration and dynamic loads. The company says it is impossible for this washer type to loosen unintentionally, due to the wedge created underneath the bolt head and nut.
