Replacing 'failed' metal bellows? Consider these reverse engineering guidelines.
Today's design engineers often find themselves in an uncomfortable predicament when replacing legacy parts or parts that have become obsolete; often the result of undocumented drawings, part numbers, or specifications. Servometer's time saving reverse engineering guidelines have made finding replacement metal bellows components easier for design engineers. This paper offers "hands on" reverse engineering guidelines and provides a solution to finding the ideal replacement bellows for your application.

Deep-sea plunge:
Motors level ocean-bottom seismometers reliably and efficiently

Seismometers capture transient phenomenon. If an instrument malfunctions, whether it's at the bottom of the ocean or atop a polar ice cap, that data is lost forever. "You need to be absolutely sure the sensor will perform perfectly every time," says Nanometrics' Jeff Potter. "Seismometers also need to be small and consume very little power when they level themselves, and that's where MICROMO has helped."

NIST study suggests ways to improve common furniture fire test
The bench-scale test widely used to evaluate whether a burning cigarette will ignite upholstered furniture may underestimate the tendency of component materials to smolder when these materials are used in sofas and chairs supported by springs or cloth, according to a new report by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and American University.

Ceramic material for solar panels could make them cheaper, more efficient
A unique solar panel design made with a new ceramic material points the way to potentially providing sustainable power cheaper, more efficiently, and requiring less manufacturing time. It also reaches a four-decade-old goal of discovering a bulk photovoltaic material that can harness energy from visible and infrared light, not just ultraviolet light.

Titanium-alloy 3D-printed bike frame is a first

In the latest demonstration of what additive manufacturing can do in the finished-product (as opposed to prototyping) space, Empire Cycles of Lancashire, U.K., has created a super-cool, experimental mountain bike that features a 3D-printed titanium-alloy frame that weighs only 3 lb. The project, undertaken in tandem with British 3D-printing specialist Renishaw, used topological optimization to squeeze out every last gram of unnecessary metal in the design.

New Henkel coating for iron castings and ferrous materials

Henkel Corporation has introduced a new, water-based reactive autodeposition coating, Bonderite M-PP 930C, formulated specifically to deliver a uniform, defect-free surface coating on raw cast components and ferrous metals. This paintable epoxy-acrylic urethane coating easily coats both the inside and outside of complex components and delivers enhanced corrosion and abrasion resistance, excellent thermal stability, and superior edge protection, abrasion resistance, and flexibility. The coating covers the entire inner diameter of cylindrical parts, controlling warranty exposure.

Engineer's Toolbox:
EOS, Airbus team up for aerospace industrial 3D-printing study

Engineers at additive manufacturing specialist EOS have partnered with Airbus Group Innovations (previously EADS Innovation Works) to assess the conventional design of a steel cast bracket against the corresponding topology-optimized design of a titanium bracket made by a form of 3D printing called direct metal laser-sintering (DMLS).

Wireless monitoring sensors work on iOS Mobile App
Developed with the mobile worker in mind, Parker's SensoNODE Low Energy Wireless Monitoring Sensors and SensoNODE mobile iOS application eliminate the constraints of traditional wired sensors in everyday applications. Small in size and easily installed, the wireless sensors offer a sealed sensor housing to facilitate sensor location in challenging environments. Three individual sensor options monitor pressure, temperature, and humidity in a wide range of liquid and gas applications. The sensors can be attached via either standard pipe thread (NPT) ports or through the use of a quick-connect coupling. They operate on a common coin cell battery for extended periods of time. The SensoNODE app works within 150 ft from the sensors.

Image - Interior permanent magnet (IPM) brushless motors
Interior permanent magnet (IPM) brushless motors
Applimotion's ULT, UTH, UTS, and UTO frameless motor kits cover a wide range of applications in direct-drive motion control with their large through-hole surface permanent magnet (SPM) rotor configurations. Applimotion is now offering interior permanent magnet (IPM) versions of these motor kits, extending capabilities to new applications. IPM motors are finding their way into many special-purpose applications in robotics, warehouse automation, remotely controlled/unmanned vehicles, and traction drives, which require high torque at low speeds plus a wide speed range. These IPM frameless motor kits cover sizes from 44-mm to 533-mm diameter and torque outputs that exceed 1,000 NM. The motors can be optimized for 12-V to 600-V applications by modifying the winding.

'Grippy' thermoplastic elastomers
When you think about "grippy" thermoplastic elastomers, grips for items like golf clubs and bicycle handles are usually the first things that come to mind. No longer, thanks to Star Thermoplastic Alloys & Rubbers. Easily colorable, easy-to-process StarGrip-X TPEs from the company's labs produce covers, stubs, and wraps that are grippy and protect expensive gadgets. The benefit is the opportunity to improve a wide range of products, from laptops and tablets to stapler bases and laboratory equipment to ensure they remain stationary on just about any surface and provide a "personalized comfort factor."

Online magnet training module

Standex-Meder Electronics has put together a great, no-cost, basics-to-advanced training module on magnets and magnetism. "Magnet Technology and Their Uses" is ideal for helping design engineers explore what magnets are, what they do, and how they are used in electronics design. Magnet usage is increasing in electronic applications because magnets can be used to switch reed sensors using no power, a significant asset in today's energy-constrained world. The magnet training module is supplied as part of Digi-Key's PTM Online ... On Demand product training modules. If you don't want to sit through the whole thing today, you can always come back later.
